Blogpost May 20-25: Sun in Gemini / Mercury into Shadow

When it comes to putting a jigsaw puzzle together, there are all sorts of ways of approaching the problem. Some people separate all the colors. Others work with just edge pieces and work to ‘frame in’ the rest of the puzzle.

This difference in approach is just like Gemini - as is the fact that wherever we meet up with the zodiac sign Gemini we encounter the ability...and often the need or requirement...to consider more than one thing.

And ‘considering’ is the word to be thinking in terms of here as Gemini is the first of the air signs, and thus all about the process of learning how to think about things...starting with thinking - a construct which leads to the inimitable Gemini habit of getting the idea then thinking about the idea (and exploring what that means as a concept) before moving on to the next thing.

All air signs work in the airy realm of thoughts, plans and choices, which makes Sun in Gemini a month of learning about how to think about things and  experiencing any manner of process, relationship, challenge or option which will get us to consider where we’re going, why we’re going ‘there’ and what that means. At one end of the behavior spectrum here is the studious, intrigued and challenging - and at the other is the careless, carefree or not caring to make the choice to care.

Often represented by fixed stars Castor and Pollux (the famous ‘Gemini twins’) the myth of Gemini has to do with taking two things - often disparate things - and figuring out (1.) how they can live in the same space...or (2.) whether one should be discarded for the other...or possibly (3.) how to find a ‘middle road’ which will either “split the difference,” avoid polarities or fit both ideas into some greater construct.

Known astrologically as a sign which operates in  a ‘mutable’ (changing, learning as it goes) sort of activity mode, the weeks ahead of Sun Gemini will find us following developments and developing new ideas to follow. All four mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) display this ‘tacking from one point to the next’ or ‘connecting the dots’ sort of activity mode, with Gemini as the airy, conceptual, verbal, thought-or-concept-driven theoretical version of mutable energy being/manifesting as the ‘origin of the idea’ (our mental faculties) as sincerely as it describes our process of thought, learning, priority, organization and choice.

Either end of any Gemini spectrum can be equally productive or unproductive - which brings us back to the jigsaw puzzle as the one place all people, things and situations Gemini seem to trip over is in needing to remember that if the object is to assemble the puzzle, though we may have fun with all our sorting, separating and ‘getting into’ any given ‘piece’ of our ‘puzzle,’ in the end the puzzle needs to get assembled.

It’s sort of like the zodiacal glyph for Gemini...

Gemini is not about ideas or situations in isolation any more than our thoughts exist as something apart from life. It’s all bound together. So we can hold to either polarity or choose a path between - with the much of our particular or personal basket of ‘habits’ coming (in human growth terms, whether we consider this using psychology or astrology) from ages five to seven-and-half, a period during which as children we learn we really exist because at some level we realize we have our own thoughts.

That process involves a natural ‘shedding’ of our early childlike ‘magical’ world ‘as’ or ‘because’ we begin to recognize reality as reality: from the duality we arrive at how we choose to think...

...which yes, in the case of some is how they either don’t ‘choose’ to think through but still adopt (the Gemini duality as a ‘multiple’ and thus one-among-others), or the ‘idea’ of what one must live with (one polarity) which one accepts while having their ‘other’ life - which may be as simple as ‘yes, I have to go to work/school but the REAL me is the person I am at home,’ or any other ‘divide’ between the voluntary versus ‘requirement’ side of life.

Whatever is going on, under Sun in Gemini it brings learning - and how we receive that learning reflects our relationship to learning (which in more astrological terms would be the relationship defined by our natal third house (the sign on the cusp, the ruler of that sign’s condition and any planets posited within the 3rd house)...as well as wherever Gemini falls in the horoscope. The third house is always ‘Gemini-like’ in that it refers to mental-and-mentality sorts of processes where Gemini the sign refers to what we do with or because of our mentality.

So we’re in for a conscious and think-ful sort of month. During Sun in Gemini we should expect or at least not be surprised to have things bring new ideas to light, replete with all the reflecting (or investigating) we might feel compelled to do on such ideas. Yes, the duality of Gemini is likely to promote many a moment of ‘if it wasn’t for Them, I wouldn’t have to take my time doing this’ but the interest which sparks our mental attention isn’t theirs, but ours.

So is our feeling we need to become informed really ‘their fault’? It is if we think our thoughts should drive the whole of this world...but considering our individual incarnation as but one person in a well-populated Existence, while it is easy (and sometimes a Gemini ‘rut’ easily tumbled into) to cling to a known instead of considering an alternative or different perspective, method or ‘ordering’ (arrangement) of goals, ideas, priorities...(etcetera)....whenever we do simply ‘hold’ to one mental position we are automatically defining what there is remains for us to learn.

Why we aren’t learning - or at least open to learning in theory...that’s a whole other very Gemini question. Most often we think it’s because ‘they don’t know.’

More often, we’re afraid to know. There is no compunction under Gemini to do anything other than know, so why we can not or choose not to know isn’t about ‘them’ or what ‘their dictates.’ It’s about the expanse, expansiveness or lack of same within our own Gemini and mercurial realm.

Speaking of which, have you heard that Mercury (ruler of Gemini) is soon to go retrograde?

I’m sorry...I know, it’s a bit much. Or at least it seems like a bit much until you consider the following - a page scanned out of my personal copy of The American Ephemeris for the 21st Century (2001-2050) at Noon:

Generated though the above may look at first simply like a sea of numbers, those numbers reflect the general ‘tenor’ or tone of things throughout the month of June, starting back with the simplest of all things - astrological decanate theory. You’ve heard it here at the blog so very often: the first ten degrees...degrees 0-9 of any sign (key word: any) manifest through actions and physicality. The second ten degrees (10-19) of any sign manifest as the sign’s connection or embodiment of emotionality (which with air signs is generally expressed by the ‘tone’ of any communication, however it happens). The third ten degrees (degrees 20-29) of any sign manifest either as our experience of/exposure to group/social doings or our response to same....

(...which theoretically would take us back to doing something and the personal experience of life, which is a first decanate matter.)

All of astrology - like all of life - is about cycles, and Gemini is where (among other things) we think about how cycles (plans?) have turned out - and what we’ve learned - or about what new experiences are out there to sample. In the end, what we should focus on (or do) next?

We sometimes try to do it all (hence the Gemini reputation for multi-tasking) but that doesn’t always work. And when we apply all this to the ephemeris page above, what we see is that (reading horizontally) the most ‘social-public-experiential’ part of the month is between May 14th and 20th - or if you stretch it, the 24th, with the most ‘intense’ or focused attentions surfacing from May 7th through the 14th/15th (if that)...plus how all of this is happening under Mercury retrograde.

Mercury rules Gemini, which means ALL of this activity is not about ‘out there’ matters or ‘the world’ or ‘life as a whole’ but rather about our thoughts. Our perspectives. Our ability or willingness to understand ourselves or perhaps be open to conversations with others.

Again, it’s not them, it’s the ‘idea’ which counts under Gemini. Mercury retrograde or not, the Sun passing through Gemini is going to call attention to our mentality, mentality as a whole and the idea of ideas... amalgamated, how they come to be, separately, as something people totally hold to or couldn’t care less about - it’s all up for contemplation.

Some won’t want to and will need to think about things. Some of us won’t need to think so much about things but may end up thinking about why that would be.

It’s just a think-ish sort of time, which is as it should be in theoretical (air sign) terms as Gemini is all about remaining ever curious while also sufficiently self-aware to know our perspective from that of others.

The Mercury retrograde as a specific is a conversation for another day yet to come. But the fact that as Mercury goes on station on June 3rd as Venus rolls over 8 Taurus (the degree of the April solar eclipse) suggests a number of realizations, results, costs, rewards and responses which still coming out of the recent eclipse.

Also...with regards to my comments on the Mars Direct post of May 17, if you will look down the Mars column you will see the pace at which Mars is moving through degrees slowing picking up.

Mars generally spends just over 2.5 days in a sign. By June’s end the Mars/Earth perspective will be such that we’ll be close to back to that rate and life will feel commensurately ‘available.’

The culmination of that ‘tale’ happens under Sun in Cancer, which is getting a bit ahead of ourselves here - which is like as not what we may want to do. This “slow” Mars against Mercury (ruler of Gemini) in retrograde with the Sun in Gemini may spell frustration and is highly likely to see some plans and efforts moving forward at a speed worthy of land speed records, musical glissandos and Doppler effects.

It is also likely to leave a bunch of people gaping with that gape representing the ‘mismatch’ of [Mercury] thinking/thought energy and [Mars] output/s, courage, need or aim.

Through what we learn or come to think (and therefore choose) because of what we experience or come to understand we will choose - and for reasons we can’t know going in, some of us will end up being sent back to our (Gemini) mental drawing board somewhere along the way.

Sometimes we need to understand why things don’t work or won’t work any more as well. Learning something new (or learning anew) is mainline Gemini - as is living with that which seemingly remains in conflict...as is compartmentalized thinking.

This year the Sun enters Gemini on May 21st at three o’clock in the morning UT/+0 zone. With Mercury already transiting Gemini and Mars still in Libra, that’s a lot of airy energy which will work wherever we are working through or ‘because of’ an idea. So if you have a list of errands and chores the list is likely to be the thing which is bothering you (“I have to get to that to-do list...”) and if there are multiple steps to some process you’ll be figuring out what has to be done when - and loving or hating that process for your own personal air sign reasons.

In nature, turbulent air is wind. In conversation, turbulent air can be debate, argument or confusion - and speaking of confusion, it’s worth remembering that Neptune will go retrograde on June 9th marking the days of June 6th/7th (depending on where you are) to or through June 11th/12th a time which can be inspirational, enjoyable, confusing, deceptive, restful or filled with boredom, insecurity or exhaustion.

The separating factor between the pluses and minuses of this time are all about ego - and thus whether we can trust, be trusted, or even trust our Self. That Neptune’s station occurs as Mercury’s station is just closing out (with Mercury and Neptune in trine) can be beautiful and romantic and everything you dream of - just don’t count on what happens now as a permanent state and be aware of any desire to cede or surrender personal boundaries without knowing the facts at hand.

Those facts may take time to gather. In the interim, the old rule about ‘risking only what you can afford to lose’ applies. Otherwise, in the famous words of astrologer Robert Hand with regards to all things Neptune, allow yourself not to know.

Yes, you want to glue something down, know something for sure or finalize something. And things may happen which are positive and pleasant, without question. But something is as yet unknown. Unsolved. Maybe even unsuspected...but yet to happen - typically at or after Mercury’s station/direct point (July 1st in this case).

But don’t think that means you should halt everything. Not at all. Though known for misplaced and garbled messages, slow mail, delays in communication, rancid traffic and all those things we do when our brain isn’t quite in sync with our ‘autopilot’ function, Mercury retrograde is very good for getting caught up (speaking of lists) and setting up or creating a mental ‘plan’ which you will then follow once Mercury goes direct.

Meanwhile, life goes on. So as Mercury enters the shadow of its upcoming retrograde (the span of degrees it will retrograde back over) on May 23rd (UT/+0) we may want to take stock of what’s in progress and what isn’t yet fully looked into, decided on, scheduled or otherwise ‘in motion.’ Given that the Sun in Gemini is always an active time even when we choose to ignore all the hustle, bustle and noise, whatever is on the table in our life in terms of that which has been/become prioritized in our thinking, that’s what is probably best allowed to come to its natural conclusion without all the pushing, shouting and mental base-jumping (to conclusions and otherwise).

Moreover, the very (Gemini) idea that Mercury enters its retrograde shadow only a couple of days after the Sun enters Gemini...?

To those who believe (or at least who are willing to explore in true and truly Gemini spirit), in the highly-spiritual (if not precisely religious) metaphysical maxim ‘unbeknownst to us, the universe is unfolding as it should’ the are no ‘coincidences,’ merely opportunities to learn from. With Mars lingering on in Libra we still have an opportunity to learn a great deal about ourselves through others, and though Mercury/Sun conjunctions such as that we will experience on June 15th/26th tend to be a little myopic and lacking in perspective (read: often a lot myopic and lacking in perspective) this is also a very good time to gain perspective on who we really are in the world, our world - and who we can be going forward.

I'm sure there is a goodly gathering of those who stop by astroPPM on a regular basis who have been reading over the past few months and wondering (between uproars in your own life) when it was that I was going to catch up with myself.

That answer would be now.

I had originally gird my whatever (while gritting my teeth and otherwise donning the armor of determination) to continue through to Mars direct (May 20th) and then breathe...

But apparently I don't look that good in blue.

Still...so you know, it isn't an easy choice. Over the years that this blog has been running I've gotten all sorts of communiques from people - from those who understand astrology as a language to those who just like having a source of questions they can think about. I'm quite sure most people think of any blog all that seriously, but it is a way to contribute and I believe in being a contributor. Caring about others and being of help is what makes our world - and thus our lives - richer. While I understand the barter and negotiating power of money and why people listen to the rich folks, the metaphysics of money state that ultimately money is just another Taurus/Scorpio connector.

Like power, like sex, like the creating of life and the meting out of death, what we use as our connector says...and should say...more about us than about them.

The point really is that I do what I do not just because despite limitations it's something I can do, but because writing online makes whatever information I have been taught available to anyone who can access the internet (give or take digital politics).

I care about laying the information out for you to use. If you want it, it's there. So despite personal need and the need to care about my personal person (in case you're wondering, being an astrologer is like being a weatherman - you still get rained on) for the next while I'll be setting up blogposts on a basic weekly basis. Since astrology is cyclic, between the blog archives and featured lists of past posts (plus the word cloud) you should be able to answer most of your questions.

Mercury in Gemini:

Mercury enters Gemini on May 7th at 2:58 in the afternoon, UT/+0 time and will remain in Gemini until mid-July.

Mid-July?

Considering how Mercury normally zooms through a sign in the matter of a few weeks, to hear that length of time is something of a sure-fire tip-off.

Of what? Of the fact that we will be going through another Mercury retrograde in rather short order.

Ah yes, Mercury retrograde... the land of bad traffic, delayed communications, late paperwork, and too much to do...all of which is (theoretically) supposed to teach us humans about priorities and limits.

Apparently we like to ditch that class.

Anyway...that retrograde begins in early June - a couple of days before Neptune goes direct, all of which brings up the subject of Mercury-Neptune connections (and Neptune's current position) talked about...here.

Mercury in Taurus/Neptune at 7 Pisces

Gemini is a sign of dualities, choices and information, all of which serve to support (or not support) the process of learning...and learning better. Under transiting Mercury in Gemini the pace of life seems to pick up, though it's possible (maybe even likely) that the truth is more about our unwillingness to choose or some choice not to prioritize which govern the limitations, successes, insights, opportunities and responses (positive or negative) we run into during this time.

Mars conjunct Diadem at 9 Libra:

Mars will enter 9 Libra - the degree of its upcoming May 20th turn to direct - on May 8th.

What does that mean? Well, let's look at it this way...Mars retrograde represents a trying period when our pro-active, assertive, even aggressive attitudes, choices, instincts, words (etc.) either get blocked, turned aside with (Mars) "point" twisted, deflected or "blunted." It's sort of all about our effort to 'get ahead' being put on hold and no, we don't like it. I doubt there ever has been (or ever will be) a Mars Retrograde Fan Club. Under Mars retrograde the normal Mars tendency to 'do' things externally (and get them done) turns inward asking us to 'do' something with or 'about' our Self as indicated by the sign (or position in your personal chart) of the retrograde, without whatever normal Mars 'my way or the highway' quotient tends to be resident in or as part of your life.

This time around, Mars' sign of retrograde has been Libra - the relationship polarity. Are we therefore shocked that our relationship(s) to others and maybe to life itself or the world around us has been odd?

Maybe. But astrologically, we shouldn't be surprised - except at just how odd things and people really are, of course.

Part of Mars retrograde theoretically is always about 're-balancing' our inner and outer worlds and the energy (the Mars "doing" or Mars "focus") put into each thing. Presented in Libra, this retrograde has had that eternally airy (air sign) quality of having to decide between ideas and people and paths and goals and all that stuff. That's the air sign thing - which is why air signs are always about choices. Gemini learns through choices and is personal, Libra learns through relationship and is thus interactive and Aquarius sees relationships in the world and how we relate to those relationships and the process of relating on an individual or collective basis.

So ever since early December, we've been in this Mars-in-Libra mode, learning about our Self through our relationships (or lack thereof) with others. The 'who,' the 'how,' the priorities one party or another party places on 'what'...it's all been a debate to the extent that they (or the situation) sets off our triggers.

Retrogrades are about us. We tend to think they're about others and 'the world' and such, but while it's natural to start by saying 'they made me feel that way' our feelings aren't theirs, so 'they' don't make us feel any given way - we feel whatever we feel because we have interacted with others.

That's pretty much the start of the Libra road - realizing that we're drawn to others or alienated by them or whatever else because of Self...not 'them.'

Where we go from there of course once we understand that is up to us.

And if we don't learn that, we just keep banging our heads - which may simply say we like being our own headache, but let's not go there.

Next we add in the 9 Libra part. By simplest definition as a first decanate degree (any degree between 0 and 9 of any sign is in it's first 'decanate') 9 Libra is a personal degree referring to our Self, our life, our body or our actions. Having a bit of a 'yang' edge (or edginess) to it, 9 Libra calls upon us to see the 'other side' of things before coming to any decision and to be fair in making any decision which stems from seeing both sides of every coin (or pancake, if you prefer). Assertiveness associated with 9 Libra often surfaces as frustration even without Mars (or Mars retrograde) getting into the act as it is in our present. And all of this...just in case you're wondering why people get so much more frizzled and out-of-hand these days than they did in the "good old days"...well, apparently it was time for us to go through all this frizzling because as of December 19, 2003 the star astrology knows as Diadem moved into 9 Libra.

That made 9 Libra part of our greater global background vibe - a fact I'm sure you'll just be charmed by once we apply the idea of Diadem, that being the idea that our crowning glory as humans being we learn from what we go through.

In other words, we're back to the experience of gaining wisdom - often through something which doesn't go at all the way you want it to.

And that sounds like Mars retrograde.

Could it be all the awful stuff we've all gone through since last December is about what we learn from it?

Apparently so...which makes me wonder what's going to happen next. You know...once we stop and realize what we've learned and begin to apply that (wisely, one hopes)?

One last note here: with Mars going direct at 9 Libra, that means that anyone with a Sun, Moon, Ascendant-Descendant, Midheaven-Nadir, lunar node or significant point (significant to their individual chart, that is) between 4 and 14 of the following signs is going to be most dynamically affected by the approaching Mars station as a turning point in their life or their thinking or their choices.

AND that such people will do well to take into account that others (people who may not have any points, planets or whatnot in those degrees) won't react the way they do. Those others may not even seem to care...even if they do care.

It's one of those times when you could agree with someone and still argue with them - especially once Mercury is in Gemini. (Such things happen.)

Or maybe Mercury entering Gemini is that clockwork signal for all clicking into place or our mental gearing finally seeing where and how we are in agreement with someone, giving us a basis to proceed. (Carefully, yes - but progress is progress!)

Mars retrograde is said to raise feelings of isolation and being 'on our own' so that we can recognize what we are capable of doing as an individual. Or what we're not capable of doing. Or what we're doing to each other because we both feel helpless, but neither party wants to admit it and neither party wants to communicate what they can't understand or admit in or about their Self or those (or that) they love or feel allegiance to.

Whatever we have learned over these past months we have learned in 'isolation' - which in the realm of air signs means 'in our mind.' That's no negative - it merely begs another question: what are we going to do with (or maybe about) what we have come to understand about ourselves (or our Self) in (dis)connection with others and our world? 

All of this is taking place in the wake of an eclipse with the other two astrological "personal planets" (Sun and Venus) being in Taurus and Aries, respectively.

Venus rules Taurus, of course. And as noted while we were skating through the last post, Venus in Aries isn't generally known as anyone's peak point of personal satisfaction.

Mind you, that doesn't spell doom. Or defeat. This is just life's requirement that we 'eat our vegetables' so that we can merit our eventual dessert...which for reasons discussed over many a past day, week and month may or may not yet be of the humble pie variety.

The Astrology of Groups: It's elemental, my dear Watson!

I worked for almost twenty years in the motion picture industry as a production accountant.

You know, the person who pays all the bills? Sorts out all the costs? Listens to crew members explain why they need just one more (fill in the blank) while bosses are getting totally bent because expenditures they approved, signed for and maybe even ordered has now run things over budget?

Yes, that person.

And while I have a huge respect and enthusiasm for the art form that movies are, I'm also of the opinion that what really goes on behind a camera while a film is getting made is often far more entertaining, frightening and astonishingly unlikely.

Some of the story lines there...? If you put it in a movie, everyone would say 'aw, that NEVER happens!!' But it does. Truth really is stranger than fiction.

Anyway....as production accountant, I was keeper and guardian of the payroll records, said records including that most basic of astrological information: birth date data. Because of this, in rare moments when it wasn't raining check requests and I wasn't trying to wolf down cold scrambled eggs (production teaches you to eat what you can, when you can, regardless of temperature)...at least once a picture I would haul out the start cards and survey all the Sun signs. If I had time, I'd break it down by department, too.

What I found was a very interesting correlation between crews and film subject matter. To name a couple I remember best, I worked on Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2... a classic sort of 'fantasy' horror film. It's crew was overwhelmingly composed of fire and water signs. Considering that fire signs are all about imagination and things imaginary while water signs are feelings and emotion, that rather fits.

As does the idea that the rather huge crew which made Shy People (a story about a family's values being tested amidst the glory of alligators and bayous)...that crew was very much tilted in the direction of water and earth Suns. Family is typified by Cancer - a water sign. Values are typically Taurus, an earth sign.

And bayous? How much more water + earth = mud, silt and swamp do you want?

What I'm saying here is that groups seem to have applicable astrological cohesiveness. It's not always as obvious as crew versus film story type - I know of one extended group of associated people whose abilities to direct others seems expressed by the prominence of Juno in their charts.

But whether it's government administrations or social interest groups, the themes are definitely interesting. And useful. After all, even if planets are scattered all over the zodiacal map, when you're dealing with a group (or just trying to grok them), knowing the 'elemental' truth about who they are AS a group can give you the clue on how to appeal to them as that group!

For instance: back when I was being the Bank of Boots on films I'd use what I knew about a given crew when choosing my words and approach to certain problems. And as shooting wore on and the crew got more tired, I'd fine tune messages and conversations even more. Not to manipulate, but in order to minimize misunderstandings and not try tired brains.

You know - so we could get the job done.

And this didn't just apply on location. Whenever I'd take up habitation in some office at a new studio I'd ask around about birthdays. My cover story was always the same - I need to know so I know when to wish you happy birthday. In most cases you don't need the year to determine a sun sign, and let's face it - people are into that birthday thing. It's nice to know someone cares.

And yes, I did put their birthdays on my desk calendar and make sure they got congratulated.

But at the same time I was able to see what kind of group I was working with.

...Was the office especially airy? If so, I'd put everything out there in question form and possibilities. And when writing memos, I'd make my tone rather literary.

...If I was in a group which was greatly earthy, I'd speak of things in tangible, practical terms, emphasizing values.

...For watery groups, feelings are always in style - whether in writing or verbal form. Always start with how are you feeling today and remember their concerns.

...And those fire signs? Well, fiery folks like fun. Even if the subject is terribly serious they'll always appreciate an interesting comparison or anecdotal metaphor.

It all comes down to appealing to, and being understood by your audience. Call it appealing to the masses...or simply getting along with masters of industry (or the miss or mister of your choice).

A Change of Seasons: The Cancer Ingress & Quarter

Astrologers pay attention to ingress charts because they literally picture  Earth's 'phases' vis-a-vis the Sun. It's all about the tilt of the planet - you know...global inclinations. 

This year, the Cancer ingress pictures two very different dynamics. The first is a challenging grand cross (above, in red lines). The other is a picture of possibilities called a 'kite' (look for the blue lines - the tail is at the bottom).

A grand cross (sometimes also called a grand square) is four squares put together. It's sort of like an intersection of streets. And to a great extent the same rules apply. Just like at an intersection, it's a matter of everyone obeying the rules, participating in turn. Which if you think about it, is really everyone working together. That's what allows us to get where we want to go. 

But I'm not going to kid you - astrological grand crosses have a nasty reputation for being endlessly challenging. People tend to bounce from one corner to the next like  dementedly undecided pedestrians. Or, to return to the actual traffic metaphor, to try to insist on having the right of way, screw the lights and traffic laws. 

And that just doesn't work. Neither does dwelling on any given corner of a grand cross!

So what are we working with here? Well, looking at each corner of the square alone and in isolation, in the first corner we have concrete problems - and an ongoing set of problems at that (Pluto-Charybdis-Orpheus in early Capricorn). We'd like someone to fix things...even if we have less than exquisite faith in anyone's ability TO fix anything (Ceres in late Sagittarius). If they don't fix it we're disappointed. If they do fix it, we don't like they way they solved the problem.

Corner number two is all about our not approving what people are doing or how they're doing it. On the other hand, we're all totally obsessed with doing what WE like to do, in spite of the fact it isn't really make us feel happily secure(d). But heaven forbid that anyone tell us that (or how) we should give up our established and unsatisfying ways! Yes, even if we know in the depths of our brains, spirits and souls (pick as many as apply) that's exactly what we should be doing, how DARE anyone tell us so!

Oh! And let's not forget how good we've all gotten at making excuses for why we shouldn't have to change. Such expertise! You'd think we were all working on a PhD in Personal Alternate Realities.

This last note (the alternate reality thing) is a tip off that there's a black hole involved in this corner - and if you guessed that, give yourself a gold star (or at least a collapsed gold star). And this black hole is one of the reasons why getting things done is going to seem so challenging over these next few months; feeling magnetized by forces beyond our control, we so often find ourselves falling into....? Right! A black hole.

In our minds, that is.

For those of the technical ilk, the list of points in this quadrant corner reads thusly: Byblis, (things old),  Eos (unstoppable appetite), Lust (fixations), Jupiter (growing knowledge), Uranus (change/anarchy), Scheat (bad reputation/reception), a black hole at 28 Pisces (probably a contributor to Scheat's bad reputation thing) and Tantalus, a perfectly delightful symbol of all which tantalizes but (groan here!) never satisfies.

So to review: thus far we have one 'threatening' corner replete with yearnings to be 'rescued' and a second corner filled with lack of satisfaction and reluctance (if not downright refusal) to give up our unhappy ways. 

Corner three is occupied with every method you can think of which we use as passive placation: the ever-popular sport of political protesting, eating, drinking, drugs and sex (very popular, these), the productive pacifiers known as exercise, work, cleaning house, doing errands and/or walking the dog (or being walked by the dog if you happen to own a really big dog)...and then there are the verbal forms which fit here too, including discussing, theorizing, taking meetings and praying. All these fall under the auspices of a Dionysus/Panacea combination made particularly strong because Saturn is exactly conjunct Panacea in a degree which is much theory and little activity, assuring us that we will all be tempted to talk ourselves into self-placation this season. And if that doesn't work, we may just stalemate ourselves.  

Corner four is where the Cancer Sun actually is. Now mind you, Sun in Cancer itself is a highly vital symbol. It holds vital dynamics important to planning and building for the future. But it does tend to be moody and very protective. And at times, certainly myopic. Cancer often beats a queasy retreat just when action would work and gets testy when supportive patience is the heart, soul and simple divinity of the answer. 

Most of all, we must remember that this is the corner facing off (opposing) against the threats. And if you want the world to be a better place you can't do that by retreating from the problem. Cancers are very big with worrying about the future of their family and going home (to that family) instead of working on worldly problems so the world is a better place for that family.

Of course there is some chance that the answer really is in someone's living room. If so, we sure do hope they'll share it with the rest of us, right?

Okay...so that's the grand cross. As the 'answer' to its puzzle may not be all that apparent, let's look at the kite, as the answer to one is found in the format of the other.

The tail of said kite, to be precise.

But what is an astrological kite? Well, the recipe goes like this: take one grand trine (ongoing, nearly unstoppable energy) and stand that on end (the blue triangle at the bottom of the figure). Then add two supporting sextiles reaching to and supporting the top of the kite. These are the opportunities. 

'Solving' or 'gaining control of' whatever is at the the top of the kite (those problems and threats?) is the goal of a kite, and as said, the bottom - the tail - is the key. And seeing that that tail is expressed here by Betelgeuse-Sun-black hole, you start with a plan. A Cancerian plan, which means everybody pulling all together, each one of us marshaling ourselves to do what we should do in the long run, not just what feels safe, convenient or habitually natural. 

Cancer is the home, and our individual family, yes. But it's also the community, the nation and the family of man. It's the sign of this world and our planet - Mother Earth. So if we want to solve the problems in our world, we need to solve the problems in the world.

As for Begelgeuse, as a sign of easy accomplishment (if we put our minds to it), that's a plus. But in a grand cross world of negatives, threats and reluctance, let's be real - the easy way to think is in terms of one's own and our own little world. But with the problems coming from across the zodiac from the ingress, the problems (and thus the solution) are not 'inner,' they're 'outer' - or more particularly, how we do or don't connect to Things External. 

So much for those of you who think you can just ignore society and the news, right? 

But why would not helping or not joining not work? 

Answer: a little galactic thing called a black hole. Maybe you've heard of them - able to bend light? Possessed of inexorable gravity? To remain in your personal quadrant this season is to be swallowed up thereby. So will you allow yourself (or even volunteer) to be sucked in by your own reluctance? Or are you going to use the power of a black hole to 'visit' the alternative reality and harness that power to do the 'alternative' thing - which is to say something different than what has been done up until now?

But there's all that threat! And reluctance! And tendency to talk ourselves out of doing anything about it? Why would we do anything else and what 'anything else' shall we do? What works here?

The answer lies in the nature of the kite - the other two trine points of the 'unstoppable engine' of endless potential we are being gifted with this season. One point is Chiron-Lilith-Neptune, a sign that we can either take our challenges on or be driven ever harder by ever increasing bad behavior and necessity. 

This is good....why? Well, think of it this way: how else is the universe going to get us moving (and to shift us out of old habits) except to make it too uncomfortable to sit still?

The key to this is that with Chiron and friends we also get Athena (wisdom) and royal Fomalhaut - the premier signature of ideals and dreams which come true IF (big IF) they are not corrupt or corruptive. So we not only have to 'do,' we have to 'do' intelligently and without cutting corners or compromising ethical morals (and moral ethics - yes, those too). 

Bearing this in mind we look to the other side of the grand trine...and there we find an  elegant combination of a critical degree Libra Moon (the need to negotiate, compromise, reach agreements and join with others), Pallas (the other form of Athena and thus wisdom) and Scylla, a monster representing forces which can either eat you, or provide you with the impetus to bring all your skill to bear and to keep trying no matter what.

By the way - nobody said this was going to be easy, merely that there is a way to turn negatives into positives. 

And it is in the end these two forms of wisdom (Pallas and Athena) which really give us the clue: these two upper corners of the grand trine are also the keynote structures upon which our opportunities (to better things) are founded. So the way forward is through use of intellectual faculties, not emotional or spiritual resources. The 'ease' promised by Betelgeuse is in Gemini - a sign about choice. The whole grand trine is in air signs (theory and concept). So we do need to think things through and we do need to conceptualize what we're going to do. We just need to resist getting sucked in by our fears, by emotionalism, by inertia or temptations.

Apparently it's all doable. So says this very remarkable chart which comes to us in an astonishing, unsettled time filled with upheavals. We shouldn't think nothing bad (or more bad) is going to happen - things are going to happen. And why would that be?

Because only through challenges and trying times do we ever learn the truth of our potentials. In other words, trying times aren't about the state of our world, they're about the nature of our trying. 

Thus do we learn.
