Pallas, Edisona, Hidalgo: The Manner of Fact
As outlined above, the next week or so is filled with what some might call ‘shifting influences.’ And since this is the week leading into a (Full Moon) Lunar Eclipse – which is to say because it’s a time we would expect to be a time when like it or not, when depending on our nature life becomes either more feeling and vital…or simply more emotional.
And let us not be coy here: “emotional” in astrological terms refers not just to the process of being emotional or exhibiting emotions, but to whatever evokes or provokes emotions – in our Self and in others.
One of the reasons to have posted the outpouring on Saturn is, in fact, all about the grid above. Saturn always represents the precepts of time, responsibility, maturation, loss, dedication, achievement, structure, and the slow, enduring effort which over a period of time leads to stable, enduring constructs – and that applies whether we’re talking about personal achievement, societal structures (including but not limited to corporations and nations). Saturn timings are also associated with patterns of income and economics, from the business of business to those social, societal and ‘mass movement’ ideas or theorems which in time become the common norm or the isolated (or elite).
Figuring out how to use Saturn in your own life is a process – one you may choose to use or not use. In a world which seems very much about building walls of late with everyone complaining about everyone else’s defensiveness and bristling however, choosing the periods of time in which to act or not act may be useful to you.
Hence the post on Saturn – specifically at the start of a week which seems filled with possibilities and opportunities for seeing things more for what they are, which would be our ticket for planning ahead.
You know…for figuring out how to make those Saturn gains without engendering equally gigantic losses or stirring up that most ugly of universal forces, negative karma?
Representative of all which promotes our understanding of dispassionate, unbiased wisdom of such clarity to cleave through all our assorted mental distractions, avoidances and nonsense, Pallas is going direct at a degree (24 Leo) which while representative of the generative power of Leo to create or ‘envision’ is focused on some simple and natural quality which itself is capable of becoming a sustaining force.
Coming into its April 7- 11 station-direct moment, Pallas has represented our clarification of Self and everything going on in our ‘inner’ world, be that personal at the individual level or having to do with our everyday world and collection of personal connections.
Once Pallas goes into direct motion, the process of clarification will shift to more external terms: we will be more aware of things around us and going on in the world and life of others AND all such things and people (and what we learn through interacting and/or witnessing their choices, actions and so on…) all that will continue ‘building’ our understanding of where we stand not so much in our (retrograde) personal world, but the (Pallas direct) world in which we live.
You know…the world which defines what we would have any opportunity to do in our personal life (or not)?
Next step: we add Edisona to our day-by-day picture.
Asteroid Edisona represents the simple quality of ‘spotlighting.’ Sometimes referred to as ‘the bright idea,’ sometimes that which we focus on in an ‘Edisona moment’ is “brilliant” and sometimes it’s simply that thing which is standing out (or outstanding) to us, whether it is to anyone else or not.
Edisona is going retrograde at 17 Sagittarius, giving us reason…or perhaps sufficient motivation to get (Pallas) clear about something having to do with whatever comes from Edisona’s station being in a degree typified by the Sabian symbol 'CHILDREN PLAYING ON THE BEACH, THEIR HEADS PROTECTED BY SUNBONNET.' The Sagittarian influence denotes something to be learned, and while what that is will be entirely individual, across the board this degree (17 Sagittarius) appears to speak to the protection of that which is immature (as children are) or which is not yet ready to stand or operate on its own, as might be true (just as an example here) with a business plan or other ‘pre-designed’ process which has not yet ‘come to maturity’ or which needs critical support.
With Hidalgo going retrograde on April 11th, something having to do with ‘protocol’ and/or ‘manners’ (read: ‘the manner of,’ ‘mannerisms’ and/or quality of presentation) comes into play as Pallas goes direct on the 9th, suggesting some sort of fact or set of facts being (Edisona) ‘spotlighted’ at a level which references a (9 Capricorn) quality typified by the Sabian 'AN ALBATROSS FEEDING FROM THE HAND OF A SAILOR' with the associated commentaries by noted astrologers speaking to ‘the overcoming of fear and its rewards’ (Marc Edmund Jones) and the culture of TRUST Dane Rudhyar points out as being the true and radiant power resident in any human being sufficiently willing to own their own harmlessness, that being the power which can (as he puts it) ‘…call the wildest creatures to him’ – an eloquent sort of way of saying what we put out comes back to us.
What we are experiencing is plainly a reflection of what we have put out there and it is not our denial of others which is the lie here, it’s our unwillingness to see ourselves as part of the universal (Aquarian Age) process.
And since Aquarius ruled first by Saturn and only then by Uranus, that would be why posting a mammoth scrawl on the subject of Saturn degrees seemed so apt.
Saturn is responsibility and requirement as solar systemic clockwork. No one gets dessert without first eating their veggies.
And even when we get dessert, that only means we get to get to work working up a new sort of (Saturn) appetite.
It’s all eternal..ongoing...self-feeding. And maybe that’s the most important thing to remember…as soon as we learn one thing we’re merely acquiring the knowledge which will move us on to our next opportunity to learn.
Sphinx going direct on the same day (April 12th) that Kassandra goes direct – with both objects in late Leo degrees – combines ‘pause’ with ‘hard to believe’ (or ‘disbelief’) in the sort of mix which manifests as astonishment…or even delighted horror or taking grim pleasure in seeing something done (and well, if painfully done). With both points going direct in an area of the zodiac known for friends as well as family connections, anything from fun at the amusement park to relieved delight at greeting supposedly long-lost loved ones is possible.
As is a hearty inhalation (and reason to stop to think a minute) as we perhaps recognize just how blind we’ve been about…something.
Thus we move forward with some portion of our essence, spirit or mentality overwhelmed, enchanted, dazzled and…as would be expected where Circe the enchantress connects with a celestial event like the April 15th Libra Lunar Eclipse…spellbound. Reduced to our lower denominators by an entirely human willingness to succumb to inner weakness as a means of celebrating mortal strength we give in, allowing ourselves to be rewarded with that we have missed out on through a lack of clarity based on inner vulnerabilities.
You know…those vulnerabilities we all so want to deny?
Yes, them. They're ours...they're us. Somehow we need to understand and accept ourselves for all those things too, for without the whole of what we are, we will never be whole in our own lives, never mind that of anyone else.
And since what we put out comes back...because how we regard others generates how they regard us in reactive turn, that's an important issue - one we would seem to have an opportunity to get additional clarity on now, which seems a rather nice thing indeed.

Mars in Leo - Hidalgo and Arachne Direct
Frontispiece from 'An Argosy of Fables' (c 1921, P Bransom, illustrator)
The date? August 28th, with Mars entering Leo at 2:06 in the morning, UT/+0 time.
As this happens, Hidalgo will also be stationing and going direct – as is its fellow space traveler, Arachne.
A symbol of ‘manners,’ mannerisms, Hidalgo refers to the manner in which we do something and the manner in which we should do something (protocols). The degree of Hidalgo’s station being 16 Sagittarius, we are all likely to be influenced by whatever it is which evokes our love of pleasure. Curious however is the fact that 16 Sagittarius is also associated with eruptions of the skin, infections and problems breathing – all of which may be thought of as being connected to (or a manifestation of) inner discomforts. Considering how this station coincides with Mars energizing the strong Leo desire to exercise our wants, desires and aims, the combination may point to anything from a simple irritation with whatever may be interrupting us to a feeling of being totally overwhelmed (drowned) by the totality of life.
That Hidalgo is going direct with Pandora just behind and Pholus plus Ixion just ahead does seem to indicate that we know there’s choppy water – or at least a lot of effort – which needs investing at some level if we’re to make things work the way we want them to, or see them move in the direction which will assist us in reaching our goals.
You know, the Sagittarian mantra.
There's also the fact that Hidalgo is a centaur - not a main belt asteroid. Cycling from just beyond the orbit of Saturn past Jupiter into the depths of the asteroid belt, Hidalgo speaks to all those things which originate beyond our (Saturn) grasp which in confronting and learning about them, we learn to manage - though we'll never quite control them.
And let's face it, control is a major human issue. So with Hidalgo in Sagittarius (a sign all about learning what works, which of our ideas need refining before they can work and what we need to learn along the way to our personal goals), much is likely to be churning through our days, our minds, our emotional psyches.
Currently just crossing into the metaphysical realm of our 'Reality' (as symbolized by Saturn), nothing about Hidalgo's effects are likely to be - or feel all that 'ordinary.' That we know from Hidalgo's inclination - which is to say, our inclination about "Hidalgo Factors."
Given the high inclination (how Hidalgo doesn't travel on the same plane as most of our planetary solar system) Hidalgo is either something we feel is 'imposed' on us or something which comes from 'off the beaten path' which we need to incorporate with our methodology (i.e., our 'life protocol'). It can be either - or both.
Plus, let us not forget the metaphysical concept of centaurs as a class. The mythic centaur is a beast which joins the upper half of a man to the powerful body of a horse. These two pieces are joined at the horse's heart and the human genitals, a combination which plainly asks us whether we will...or even can 'rise above' our pure animal instinct to a place where we can insist that we use our greatest (animal) strength to serve the greater thoughtful purposes life would ask of us - both for life's sake, and for our sake, too.
With Mars ingressing Leo trailed by Tantalus and fronted by Scheherazade and Sphinx suggests that there’s a ways to go before we can become that living legend in our own eyes. But we do truly and sincerely want our (Leo) vision to be – or become our truth.
The fact that the Moon is in early Gemini as this pair of events takes place is also interesting, as Moon in Gemini always indicates some degree of personal investment on the mental plane. Given that the Grand Sextile will be in effect rather fleetingly (but importantly) very early on August 29 (UT/+0) this means the effects of the Grand Sextile, though positioned in earth and water, will formulate mentally…and inspire us to see a more powerful, more (Sedna) authentic road which may yet be followed through our life.
Into which comes the Hidalgo-Arachne issue of whether we are too caught up in some manner of being or some external protocol to heed either the warning or invitation offered us by life…events…karma…fate….time.
Even for those who will follow the invisible light of faith, achieving those ends will take planning, effort and surrendering to our vulnerabilities to get there – a concept which Mars in Leo may or may not be in sync with, depending on your natal Mars and where Leo falls in your chart. In the most general sense, what we could expect here is a pretty clear split between those who will tend to scoff and those willing to recognize truths which require that they put their ‘big boy’ (or girl) pants on and get to work.
The Grand Sextile is a call for us to internalize the idea that life is not the idea of living, but the event, the experiencing of it, the taking the heartfelt risk if you know deep down in the noodles of your soul that you really need to change, know or embrace something new.
Maybe even somebody new – who knows!
Because the Moon represents our ‘everyday life,’ the fact that it will be in Gemini as Mars moves into Leo denotes a general sense of ‘knowing what I’m doing’ – into which comes the enormous funneling of energy governed by the linking of then and now, heaven and earth, conscious and subconscious, actions and fate. Given the accompanying elements attending the Mars/Leo ingress, we are all likely to be focused (at some level) on something we feel is ‘inadequate’ in ourselves…or maybe just in life. And we’ll be doing our best to cope, putting a shiny (Scheherazade) face on things despite our (Sphinx) quandaries and the fervent (Tantalus) wish that we didn’t have to deal with any of it.
Oh shades of Sedna’s station…! The echoes of our expectations will so ring loudly through the cosmos.
And more importantly, through our consciousness. But are they ours? Are those ideas really what we think and feel about ourselves? Or do they come from some ‘when’ which is not now?
What is really important?
Hidalgo’s station will begin on August 26, come to full focus on the 28th (as it goes direct) and continue through the 30th. As with all stations, its to our advantage to pay attention to any event or moment which embraces or evidences the ‘meaningful motion’ – or lack of same…the being paused by focus…which occurs.
Remember it. Pin it to your mental bulletin board for further reflection.
Another concepts with regards to stations in general which bears remembering now: events which occur during the ‘station window’ but prior to the station generally refer not to things ‘changing directions’ in your life, in your regard, in your opinion, but will also evidence as time goes on.
Like the windows pictured here, astrological influences come in a myriad of shapes
and sizes and can bring a refreshing breath of air, chilling cold or blistering conditions to our lives.
Every time there's an astrological station, transit or eclipse,
we each face the choice of whether we will open the window and risk a moment
of shock for the chance that our souls will be fanned by the balm of warmth and
caring - or not. Far too many of us, I suspect, have our windows locked
with the latches painted over.
In other words, the event prior to station exactness is about something which hasn’t yet happened – at least not in concrete fullness. Against this, the thing which happens or occurs to you after the moment of the station but within the ‘station window’ are by and large a ‘playing out’ of events or situations which have already occurred.
These effects are subtle, but very and entirely real. Either way, the effect is traceable: for those of you who are astrologers or into astrology (yes, I know you’re out there and I’m complimented by your taking time to read this blog)…grab your natal chart (preferably a detailed version of same) and start by looking at the symbols or aspects being struck at the time of your “current event.” Then look back or forward through planetary movements to see when some other body will hit these points. The larger the event, the more significant the transit.
With that recipe duly dictated, on to Arachne. Among the thousands of main belt asteroid (representing things we encounter along the way to mastery and achievement), Arachne is going direct at 12 Sagittarius at 9:50 p.m. on August 2th (timed for the UT/+0 zone). The degree 12 Sagittarius is a highly energetic degree which rife with passion of all types – sexual and otherwise. Such energy may be used directly (in a straightforward manner), used as an ‘infusion’ in the healing of others or even converted into insight or far-seeing visions...good or bad.
An 'Arachnecized' soul from Dante's Purgatorio (Canto 12)
as envisioned by master illustrator Gustave Dore (1832-1883)
Since we are talking about Arachne, it is to be expected that (depending on where 16 Sagittarius falls in your natal and current solar chart) you may be, or get ‘caught up’ in one or another form of this energy and find it difficult to make a shift in the way your moment-to-moment life requires.
In going direct on the 28th, Arachne also has a station allowance which begins on August 26th and which then extends through August 30st.
And since both stations extend beyond the moment of the Grand Sextile, look for a change of situational dynamics and personal outlook as the spiritual linkage ends.
I know full well we each have our own orientation to how life works and what’s worth taking our time to witness. People go out to watch eclipses, to watch alignments.
Personally, my deepest respect goes to the Grand Sextile, the image of the Hermetic statement ‘as above, so below.’
But maybe that’s just because of how my life is shaped.
We each need to follow our uniquely personal path. We are not ‘like’ one another – we’re not meant to be ‘like’ anyone else. Our friends, associates, lovers and dearly loved ones are not those who always agree with us, they are those whom we can love for their humanity. For their willingness to share. We love them for being there…we love them for giving us space enough in which to operate on our own, as our own person.
Mars in Leo is at its heart about the inspiration to be more tomorrow than we are on any given day. To have that drive, to see someone else struggling with their mortality and their potential is inspiring. We all have lives filled with details and histories which seem to warp us so tantalizingly (in the Tantalus manner), which wrap and bind us in Arachne-like silken threads.
Mars in Leo is one of those forces which allows us to see beyond the simplistic. All things happen for a reason is not just a slogan.
It’s a reality. And for the next seven-plus weeks while Mars continues its transit of Leo, we have an opportunity to see through life’s veneers to the level where we are each capable of informing ourselves on a hugely powerful level about why that which may have been so difficult, painful or seemingly detrimental is the gift which allows us to elevate ourselves from a level of life where we live for mundane pleasure to a place where we are able to be fused and fueled by those truly great motivations which allow us to become the gift to ourselves and everyone else in life.

Uranus, Hidalgo, Nemesis: Parameters and Prerogatives
The Wheel of Fortune
by Edward Burne-Jones (1863)
As this blog posts on March 11, Bali is on station and going retrograde. Our vision of what things should be (Bali as paradise) is under review. And yet, we probably believe in it all more strongly – as we often do when such idyllic concepts are believed in. Reality can disappoint us – the dream, the image, the fantasy of what things could (or should?) be never does.
Remember Alfred Hitchcock, the movie director? He knew this on an intrinsic level. It’s part of what makes his movies so tense, so artistic, so eerily suggestive. Our minds are far, far more capable of scaring or enchanting us than reality will ever be. So while we gain something irreplaceable when we go on vacation to somewhere beautiful or have experience some wonderful event, the place or the moment is what it is. The real elation comes from our emotional reaction…the how we ‘spin’ things in our emotional mind.
That’s Bali.
But as this ‘emotional exalting’ mechanism is at its ‘station balancing point,’ Uranus is pressing forward to the very last, nth degree of Pisces…wringing the last drop of emotionality out of the old cycle, the old way, the old life before exploding into the new Aries world which is as full of potential as it may be full of helplessness. Or innocence. Or courage.
Aries is the sign of the infant. Infants do what they do because they have no pre-conception of good or bad.
And this is the energy the Uranus clock is striking, tapping, accessing and liberating as it hits 0 (degrees) Aries 0 (minutes) at 53 minutes after midnight on March 12, 2011 (UT/+0).
But before that ‘breakthrough’ moment arrives – before the door opens on the colorful land of Oz, first comes the tornado which rips us out of a world which as Dorothy’s Kansas was in the famous story – wasn’t working for her.
I once dated a guy from Kansas. We met at work – at a magazine publishing company, to be exact. Upon learning where he was from, I glibly made the obligatory Wizard of Oz joke: oh! I thought Kansas was all black and white.
We were both in our 20’s, so he evidently wasn’t as yet dead-tired of such, so I merely got a dignified sniff and somewhat lofty correction: actually…it’s mostly sepia tones.
Years later I drove through Kansas – much of which is beautiful. And he’s right – a lot of it is sepia toned.
So your life may be dull. Or as people in the Middle East and elsewhere have been making so very plain, it may simply not be tolerable any more.
Even if you’re completely comfortable with and in your world, this is going to be a time when things don’t feel entirely ‘solid’ or secure. They may be fine…or they may be about to melt in your hands like ice in a tin bucket sitting on black asphalt on a hot summer day.
You don’t know yet…and you aren’t going to know yet for a while; though the Uranus clock with strike zero Aries o’clock within the next twenty-four hours, Neptune is sitting at the intensely societal, social and systemic degree of 29 Aquarius. Neptune moved into 29 Aquarius back on March 5th and will not slip-slide its big blue self into Pisces until April 4th. And until that happens, many a proverbial ball will be in the air. Or you may think that all is well – that your bullet has been dodged. Or that the status quo will hold. Or that there will be nothing new to contend with.
Or, or, or…
We just don’t know. And that’s the point: we’re in a period when one of our biggest bundles to grapple with is how to carry on without knowing.
We live in a very ‘what is it?’ world. We really like to nail things down. We like to think we know what will work.
Right now, we don’t. And if astrology’s metaphysical lessons mean anything, the more you try to ‘hold on’ or ‘nail down’ or define things, the less they are going to conform to your expectations.
Neptune Rule #1:
Allow yourself not to know.
.
Neptune Theory #1:
The thing you think ‘must be’
probably isn’t. The thing you think
least likely will probably prove true.
.
In this moment, as this blog posts there is also a point of Nemesis to contend with. Considering that Nemesis is a cosmic ‘warning’ which says just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should (and that there are consequences for many a thing you think won’t have any down side)…
Nemesis went retrograde in late January – about the time that people in the Middle East rose up in protest against their government, about the time that there was a distinct and disturbing uptick of violence in Mexico, about the time of the Arizona shooting which left six people dead, about the time natural confluences were wreaking havoc in Australia….
Nemesis went retrograde in early Libra, making its turn to retrograde a shift from ‘how can I do/get something done?’ to ‘how can anything get done?’ From all of us focusing on what others (Libra) were doing wrong, we began to think more in terms of how any of us can get what we need done considering what others are doing.
Do they know…can’t they see how what they’re doing isn’t, doesn’t, can’t work? Why do they think everyone else is there to exist at their beck and personal-financial-emotional-theoretical call?
Now, as Nemesis retrogrades back into Virgo, those questions become more systemic, more ‘realism’ oriented. From being more or less about ‘how can they THINK that?’ (think being a Libra/air sign conceptual world), now the question will be more about how we can do that. Or how others can do that to us. Or how they think we can do anything if our basic needs aren’t being met.
And yet, with Pluto in Capricorn, this also reminds us that this is a long-term (decade and a half) period which is all about becoming pragmatic. It’s about scaling back…focusing on what necessity really is.
That will now be what a lot of debate is really about.
It is also to remember that we are also in a Hidalgo station period. Hidalgo will go retrograde about sixteen hours after Uranus goes retrograde, suggesting that a lot of the push, the urgency, the pressure and stress(ed) points of this next day or so will best be dealt with more or less nobly.
And yet there is that little danger here…that some will take the Hidalgo ‘nobility’ concept and turn it into ‘elitism.’ The same ‘class/caste’ system which populations are rebelling rather literally against in the Middle East have come to be more of a financial class/caste system – and (yea verily) a raison d’etre for many in many other parts of the world.
Das Paradies
by Jan Bruegel (c. 1620)
So….?
Hopefully you will take it on credit that there’s a reason why I would now ask you to gaze into the magical historical crystal ball….and to think about how through the decades, centuries and millennia, when the divide between rich and poor gets too immense it always comes to a crunching, crashing end.
And one of the big problems in this epic opera is how those who are secure literally have no idea of what its like to do without. It’s not malicious – it just is. Marie Antoinette had no idea of how poor the poor among her French citizens were and for that (and a couple of other things) they cut her head off. On a little less drastic scale, I’ve had many a conversation with perfectly nice, sensible, well-educated, caring people here in LA who amaze me with how little they know about what life is for those who must do without. Try to talk to them about life on that scale and they get not vaguely uncomfortable, but really truly seriously uncomfortable.
And that’s probably what’s really most offensive in the split of fiscal classes. It’s not just what those who Have have and what those who Don’t Have don’t have – it’s that those who Have don’t even what to KNOW what those who Don’t Have go through in trying to survive.
That’s enough to drive a person crazy. Or incite hate. Or get people with nothing into a real frenzy of you don’t know what it’s like? Well let me just burn your house down and reduce you to where I live so you can SEE and FEEL what it’s like!
Morning Fantasy
by Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis (1904)
That’s enough to drive a person crazy. Or incite hate. Or get people with nothing into a real frenzy of you don’t know what it’s like? Well let me just burn your house down and reduce you to where I live so you can SEE and FEEL what it’s like!
It will not take much ignoring to create the friction now. And I do mean friction (as in, lighting a fuse), not fiction – the thing I can ignore, should I wish to.
Privilege is an odd thing. I think one of the greatest privileges I have had in my own life is to spend time scratching by, counting pennies. And since where I came from was just financially solvent enough yet surely emotionally deprived enough to teach me that people really matter those two things have coalesced into a readiness to experience pain. Those who have never felt it are scared of it. Those who have been through a lot of pain – in the end – often realize how pain can be incredibly educational. It not only teaches you that you can survive, but that in the end, survival depends not just on the Self - but on those around us, and whether they're willing to deal with their Self.
Think I’m just getting into some sort of mushy moral proselytizing here? Surprise – I’m not! This is actually part of the grand amalgamation of the processes going on. We're all being made to feel more. Those who are used to it shrug more, grumble a bit and move on. Those who have been able to have a 'nice' life will find events more shocking.
In the end, this becomes a vast and global method of beginning to level the playing field or simply break it into two. That's pure Aquarian Age stuff - as we've been talking about in other posts. Bottom line, pretty much precisely to the degree and in areas of life where we think we have it ‘good’ where we are more than likely going to take our tumble.

But that’s the way of Uranus entering Aries - and yet another blog. Tomorrow’s, as a matter of fact…so not to worry...none of us have all that long to wait!
