Conscious Sun Watching

The video above is from NASA/Goddard. It's simple, really. No one talks - it's just running images of the Sun being what the Sun is: a metaphorical image of our consciousness.

(Okay, so I like the music track too.)

If you can, I suggest watching this full screen. Just give yourself a moment...think of what you see as the workings of your mind.

Then try thinking about how this one process exists for you and everyone else. We think of things differently and tend to have differing priorities.

But if there's only one Sun, then whether we know it or not, we're in sync...which is a vastly simple and endlessly Aquarian idea.

Ceres News

By seemingly every electronic medium possible, word went out yesterday that the presence of water on asteroid Ceres has been confirmed.

That’s extra-special news.

But it’s not just the science which counts here, though that’s rather fascinating as well. However, on an astrological level, since metaphysical water represents emotion and Ceres-the-symbol tends to ‘act’ somewhere between earthy, pragmatic, practical and perhaps a bit airy-(Libra)- theoretical in the sense that Ceres is often seen connected to whatever plan we have (or need to put together) in order to reach that tangible and practical goal.

And we already know that Libra is not just a sign all about connecting and interacting, but one which we are getting a major ‘overhaul’ in courtesy of Mars’ eight-month transit of this airy sign. 

As for Ceres, located in the heart of the asteroid belt, Ceres is the first asteroid-type object considered for reclassification as a dwarf planet…which is where the water gets a bit muddy. The NASA version of this announcement (Link Here) says Ceres was reclassified as a dwarf planet back in 2006 (which I seem to remember being when Pluto got “demoted”). And yet…

Wasn't this 'it's a dwarf planet' thing not chiseled in stone? I so distinctly remember that being the case that when I read today’s announcement, I went over to JPL (the Jet Propulsion Laboratory does function as the data bank side of NASA, after all)…and looked Ceres up.

And here’s the header I found on the JPL page:

Look right down near the bottom of that page header and you'll see "1 Ceres" (one being Ceres' numerical designation) ...and right below that it says main belt asteroid. Not dwarf planet, not SDO, not TNO, not centaur...just asteroid.

NASA’s spacecraft Dawn is on the way towards Ceres and will arrive in February 2015. I seem to recall that as when the ‘final call’ was going to be made on whether or not Ceres really is a dwarf planet.

If Ceres is classified as a dwarf planet, that will make it the only (known) dwarf planet in the asteroid belt or anywhere inside the orbit of Neptune. It will also means that the astrological idea of Ceres as an emblem of planning, protection and ‘the need to bring things to harvest’ (or to reap what we earn) will become far more important. We may have greater needs and things may make a greater impact on us so that we will recognize those needs. What we’re doing, how we’re doing it or how we’re going about (or not going enough to) either earn…or to receive what we have earned stand to become more vital to  our general (continuing) status quo, or to our personal progress.

That’s if Ceres is deemed a dwarf planet. (I think this probably merits an email, which only proves an old slogan I learned when working movie production: 'you don't have to know everything - you just need to know who to call.' Seriously! That's how movies get made!)

Regardless of label, the intent of today’s announcement - the facts about Ceres having water and some sort of atmosphere – those remain. At some level water denotes not only emotionality but also life…life as we know it on our very watery planet.
  
To be precise here, it was the ESA (the European Space Agency) which sent out the word as it was the ESA’s Herschel Space Telescope which issued this news was made with Ceres at 27 Libra – a degree which gives us the Sabian Symbol ‘A man becoming aware of spiritual forces surrounding and assisting him’  - and the Sun conjunct Hebe at 3 Aquarius, a pairing which echoes the idea of eternal or ‘pure nourishment’ of a mental or theoretical (air sign) type which focused through the degree 3 Aquarius speaks to a number of issues.

The first is the idea of a long term struggle which seeks to establish some truth. Or something you truly want to accomplish or bring into being. Loss – particularly as that concerns those we care about – seem to be part of the 3 Aquarius lore and whether connected or not connected to the idea of ‘a loved one lost,’ are ideas or questions which are either painful or uncomfortable to you… and which you have to deal with anyway.

Today we have been told that it will take both mental and spiritual strength to reach our goals.

Tomorrow – as this post goes out - we will find out more about our humanity through the experience of someone else’s life or necessary choice. They may be our friend or someone we hear about on the news or online – it doesn’t matter.

This is obviously an ongoing story we will learn a lot more about next February. But that we are hearing about Ceres now, at a moment when so many of us are wondering what to do and how to get through the process of doing it, and that Ceres is in a sign (Libra) which is Venus ruled….?

That should tell us that we are moving towards a point when Dawn will arrive and we’ll get a clearer and more definitive perspective on the emotionality of our values and whatever ‘system’ we have when it comes to evaluating the value of people, information, ideas or anything else as we pursue our aims, dreams and goals.

One last thought here…spacecraft Dawn will be arriving at Ceres just as Ceres (which by then will be in Capricorn) takes up a position alongside Pluto basically as Venus is doing now.

That’s an astrological “dotted line” which says that some of what we’re planning, planning on or aiming to achieve starts now and comes to fruition (or to the end of a ‘next step’) next February. Or perhaps you’re going about your business now…planning, doing (once Venus goes direct, we would suppose?) with all of what you’re doing now being part of something which happens next February which is your ‘harvest’ for efforts made now.

As for water – and evidence of an atmosphere now being verified on Ceres, that suggests that with careful effort and a bit of sensitivity (maybe even vulnerability) a whole new world will soon unfold.

We just have to endure all the getting there.

A Celestial Christmas

Earth, Venus and Jupiter as we seldom see them - from "out there." This

As if to get us thinking, as of Christmas Eve the fine folks at Spaceweather gave us the above image – one taken by NASA’s Stereo-B probe and dated December 24, 2013.

(And I don't think Space probes ever fudge dates...do they?)

It is thought by some that the Star of Bethlehem in the story of Jesus’ birth was actually a major planetary conjunction, the merging of which would have created what the ancients saw as a singular star…a singular metaphysical sign of miraculous things to come.

It is never my purpose to preach religion here at astroPPM, but I think the idea of that – the ‘singular sign’ is true whether you believe in Divinity or Jesus or any of it. It’s simply a fact – that time came and went and the person born mortal who has come down to us as Jesus, complete with everything which surrounded the life of Jesus, was a singular sign. The rise and spread of Christianity – simply as a religion as potent as it is – changed the world as it was known at the time.

The world is going to keep changing. Every once in a while cycles converge and things fall into line and we both break free and get closer to who we are and who or what we love all at once. We’re all going through some of that…life is feeling sticky exactly in the same moment that it’s beyond control and yet ours to manage.

From Stereo-B’s perspective, Earth and Jupiter are less than a degree apart. For the spiritual, this may look like the view from Above…a ‘regard’ for those of us living on our beautiful, luscious blue planet.

That aside, in a more simple astrological sense, to have Earth and Jupiter together is a happy image which looks like nothing more than that most treasured blessing we all say now and again:

Peace on Earth, Goodwill to Mankind.

Comet ISON: “Cancel the Funeral”

While much of America dashed off in the middle of the night to partake in Black Friday shopping…while a friend of mine back east studiously ignored his Thanksgiving Day sink load of dishes (I got the email, which is how I know about this sulk)…and while the blog astrologer tried to sleep off chasing the NASA and Spaceweather feeds (that’ll show me…)…

While I slept, Dr. Tony Phillips and the rest of the gang at Spaceweather (and NASA) had a busy night of proving we had all subjected ourselves to a serious case of pre-demise. And the above  - “Cancel the Funeral” was exactly what as of this morning (November 29th) was the official word on ISON.

In other words, Comet ISON is still there. If you go to Spaceweather and click on the film loop, you can now see the comet approach...apparently dive 'into' the Sun and then - miraculously - reappear.

(Says a lot about just how dense rock can be, doesn't it? And what does that say about us?)

Among other things, this says we should be getting some pretty brilliant sky watching in the next little while as ISON comes out from behind the Sun (behind vis-à-vis our position here on Earth). And by the by…if you think it’s unusual for scientists, astronomers and astrologers to be caught out looking dim when confronted with the universe, uh…thanks, but that wouldn’t exactly be the truth. We who are fascinated with watching and figuring out and correlating what we knew with what we’re learning – we do this stuff all the time.

In astrology (so you know) there are really a couple of schools of thought on this stuff. A large proportion of the astrological community is still wedded to ancient texts in a way which would make you think there’s nothing new under the Sun (any sun, anywhere in the universe) which is just a silly thing to assert. With all due respect to those who read this post and are religious, this same ‘all the truths were spoken back then’ stuff seems unlikely to the max. After all, if Deity existed then Deity still exists – what makes us think that a Deity who allegedly ‘cared’ so much about us a couple of thousand years ago that we were given chidings and lectures…why wouldn’t that Deity care enough about us not to communicate with us in modern times?

(I just don’t get that.)

As for astrology and astrologers, a lot of astrologers haven’t even gone beyond the classical to asteroids, dwarf planets and such – never mind following the NASA/Spaceweather feed around.

If nothing else, you know where I was over Thanksgiving, right?

Personally, I’m thinking of this whole Comet ISON affair as (in part) a now-you-see-it, now-you-don’t reflexive dealing with our lives. The science part will sort itself out over the next weeks, months and years of course.

As for ISON…considering the worldwide press on this comet, at this point we are dealing with an object which at least represents something ‘out there’ which has our attention. We thought it was over…but it isn’t over. And now, according to science, whatever this ‘thing’ is in our life…it is going to become a ‘brighter factor’ as we move forward. Whether this pertains to something you thought you had lost which now you realize isn’t lost…or something you thought was a negative which has revealed itself as a positive which will be a ‘light’ to you in weeks to come.

Something 'out there' which has been maybe physically, but maybe mentally or emotionally 'heading towards us' remains intact.

But then, so do we. And what that means in each of our lives has yet to be revealed. Some of it will be evolving in present tense, but just as ISON entered our

Sometimes our ‘time cues’ seem odd because the flowing of energetic ‘waves’ caused by moving objects takes time to reach us. Fortunately with ISON we now have an opportunity to move forward feeling our own solar consciousness in action. This comet was only 'discovered' (brought to our conscious attention) back on September 12th - that being when this very ancient object got close enough that we of Earth took notice of it.

So whatever took almost three months to get here...it will like as not take time to resolve. Or complete. Or maybe it will take you that long to reach some decision.

Whatever it is, considering ISON's timing, we have an opportunity now to move forward and see - and feel ourselves seeing - some pretty brilliant things. So whatever comes of this solar system steeplechase, no doubt we yet shall see. In the meantime, it seems a good sign that we can cancel the cosmic funeral because there’s no comet demise which requires mourning.

Carl Sagan: The Pale Blue Dot

'The Pale Blue Dot' is an iconic piece of video. It makes the rounds of the internet now and again and this time showed up in my email box courtesy of a friend in the UK who had received it as a thoughtful sort of way of celebrating the fact that as of about a month ago, NASA's Voyager spacecraft has left our solar system.

One thousand five hundred and ninety pounds (722 kg) of Earth's essence is on its way to somewhere else. It will take thousands of years to get there and by that time human beings will have surely figured out how to traverse space in a far more effective manner than we do now.

If we haven't killed each other off, that is.

And that brings me back to Sagan's quiet if touching commentary on what it means to be a human being living on our Earth.

Another Neptunian Moon

The following news release was sent out by J.D. Harrington at NASA Headquarters in Washington on July 15th:

NASA'S HUBBLE FINDS NEW NEPTUNE MOON

WASHINGTON — NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has discovered a new moon orbiting the distant blue-green planet Neptune, the 14th known to be circling the giant planet.

The moon, designated S/2004 N 1, is estimated to be no more than 12 miles across, making it the smallest known moon in the Neptunian system. It is so small and dim that it is roughly 100 million times fainter than the faintest star that can be seen with the naked eye. It even escaped detection by NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft, which flew past Neptune in 1989 and surveyed the planet's system of moons and rings.

Mark Showalter of the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif., found the moon July 1, while studying the faint arcs, or segments of rings, around Neptune. "The moons and arcs orbit very quickly, so we had to devise a way to follow their motion in order to bring out the details of the system," he said. "It's the same reason a sports photographer tracks a running athlete — the athlete stays in focus, but the background blurs."

The method involved tracking the movement of a white dot that appears over and over again in more than 150 archival Neptune photographs taken by Hubble from 2004 to 2009.

On a whim, Showalter looked far beyond the ring segments and noticed the white dot about 65,400 miles from Neptune, located between the orbits of the Neptunian moons Larissa and Proteus. The dot is S/2004 N 1. Showalter plotted a circular orbit for the moon, which completes one revolution around Neptune every 23 hours.

The Hubble Space Telescope is a cooperative project between NASA and the European Space Agency. NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., manages the telescope. The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore, Md., conducts Hubble science operations. STScI is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy Inc., in Washington.

First of all, I'd like to pause here for a moment to reflect (all puns intended) on the fabulousness of the Hubble Space Telescope.

I love what Hubble does - which you probably know by now. If Hubble was a guy, I'd absolutely marry him and happily pick up his digital socks for the rest of all eternity.

More to the point however (I know, get on with it already!) the two dates mentioned in this release are astrologically interesting. Obviously the fact that this news was released to us (the general public) on July 15th puts it at the opening of Uranus' station window.

That would be a station-retrograde window, suggesting that there is information 'yet to come' - and not just on Neptune's newest-found moon, though that will no doubt be part of the more worldly part of this process.

This moon was spotted ("found") on July 1st as SETI  astronomer Mark Showalter was investigating 'the arc of Neptune's rings,' suggesting a 'halo' effect and how we surround (ring) ourselves...and our Neptunian beliefs or ideals or disappointments or feelings of abject loss...with 'orbiting energies' or small bits of manifestation or thought through which we view greater life (the rest of space) and through which we are seen.

In thinking this through, I of course went back to Saturn - the most famously ringed of all planets. There is an unparalleled beauty in Saturn which seems strangely foreign to its list of associated astrological concepts (responsibility, time, structure, dedication, achievement, ability, effort, rules, tangible consequences and rewards)...foreign UNTIL, that is, until we recognize that Saturn does represent the cause-effect of earning.

That we work for will be given to us. That we don't earn we will neither fully understand the value of...or often end up having.

Saturn's hallmark human trait is "achievement" - that which we think of as success, however that manifests in your life. And here too there is an 'inner' and 'outer' perspective. What you consider your success may not be what other people think of as your successes.

And the difference between those two goals - however you see it - is generally the difference between hard core factual survival and everyday tangible life (Saturn) and that which we yearn to have or feel ourselves having as a life force powering our will to exist, to do more, to be a deeper, better person.

Which gets us back to Neptune. Or rather, the relationship and differences between Neptune and Saturn as astrological symbols - and why they are what they are.

Saturn is the outermost planet we can see with our 'unaided' eyes. It thus defines the farthest 'reach' in terms of human, corporeal, 'finite world' grasp. So we shouldn't wonder that Saturn is the ruler of Capricorn, the sign of achievement and what we can achieve in corporeal, real-world terms.

And yes, there is Saturn as the primary (ground-laying) ruler of Aquarius, with Uranus as the Aquarian outcome ruler. Aquarius is an air sign - it deals in theory. Thus what we can grasp in reality becomes the basis for what we think we can do in this world.

Together, these forces become our achievements (Capricorn and all things 10th house) and what we will garner (Aquarius and all things 11th house) from whatever we 'earn' a 'mastery of,' whether that's income or a sense of having a place in this world or society, acceptance by others and (maybe most importantly) a sense of having safely accomplished our premier human mission: finding a way to achieve some measure of freedom within ourselves. 

 
That 'freedom' is defined by each one of us in our own, entirely very special and individual way.

Beyond Saturn in planetary terms lies the realm of Uranus and Neptune: that which is known and relatively understood, but not governed by us. Uranus and Neptune symbolize the energy we can feel but not control, the vibrations of intuition and imagination, those sparks which are genius and that abject fear which drives us to madness.

As Uranus represents science, so we search.

But in the moment that we discover something, that enticing things we 'know but don't know' begins leaving the realm of the un-grasped as we 'try to get hold of it.'

That is the influx of energetics coming past Uranus and reaching the solidity of Saturn.

Moving beyond Uranus we have the wondrous world of Neptune, a planet so incredibly mysterious it defines the realm of imagination. For those of us bound up in our carbon-water Earth world, the idea that Neptune's inner mantle is composed of something which under planetary pressure (the 'pressure of existing') sheds diamonds which slowly accumulate at the planet's core is an idea so evocative it speaks reams to our inner sense of possibility.

And Neptune is magnetic. That it's moon Triton is the only known object which rotates its planet in retrograde motion (meaning Neptune rotates in one direction and Triton orbits in the other) suggests the electrical qualities of a generator. And indeed, the whole planet seems to 'generate' not only the physical magnetics to control a huge swath of space (in which orbit the Plutinos, all of which have fluctuating and variable allures which carry highly Neptunian characteristics) but the energetic which in following in...maybe enveloping, maybe mixing with, maybe pushing all other energies towards our solar systemic center (the core of our lives)...that suggests that everything about Neptune - including the discovery of another moon - is a heightening of the oh-so human ability to lose ourselves in ourselves, to hide behind our own veils of illusion or fear, to refuse to see our mammoth potential and 'diamond core' and to perceive that which may be true but which we are...at least as yet...afraid to depend on.

Is it real, or is it Memorex?

Should I trust them? Do I trust myself?

Once Jupiter entered Cancer on June 26th we got a marked onset of emotional effects as signaled by three major planets being in the water element. Between June 23rd and July 6th, the lunar nodes (the Moon being our 'localized' or 'personal' sense of emotionality and feelings, inclusive of what or who prompts them) were at cross quarters.

As for the finding of Neptune's moon, we don't have much information on S/2004 N 1 as yet. The fact that scientists are doing little more than giving it a charmingly banal number is the metaphysical equivalent of saying 'oh yes - THAT' as we take note of something we know we want to know more about...even though we also know (suspect?) that it may alter our feelings on much else.

So has life been between July 1st and July 15th. Through social/societal doings, our relationships and our relationship to relationships or how well we do-or-don't relate (the Lunar Nodes at Cross Quarters thing) and all the feelings and emotional experiences we've been having (the major planet grand trine in water) coming to know more about our ideals... our illusions... and as we reflect on our relationship to all the boundless possibilities which lie beyond our Neptunian longings,  illusions, yearnings, ideals and fears.

More information yet to come...from NASA with regards to this moon, from life - as pertains to that which we're just now discovering and reacting to - and from that which is our human spirit, which so sweetly if desperately wants to be securely known and loved both by ourselves and others both for what we are and what we aren't in the fullness of time and the totality of Reality.

Mars in the Cross-Hairs

The ever-lovable NASA sent out a circular today. It's title:

Collision Course?

 A Comet Heads for Mars

 

(Yes, that's a link, in case you want to read the whole thing.)

 

The comet, which NASA refers to by the cozy name C2013 A1 is reportedly 1-to-3 kilometers in diameter. And NASA being NASA, they're hopping to the launch pad to get something sent off to Mars in time to be there should such a collision really occur.

 

Their question is pretty obvious: what would the impact of such an object do to Mars as a planet? Considering Mars is a bit over half the size of our beloved Planet Earth it's not like the whole planet is going to crumble or anything. But NASA is tapping its metaphysical (more like digital) pencil, wondering what such a smack will do to...say, Mars' magnetic field, which unlike Earth's cozy swaddling blanket is already a splintered and somewhat chaotic thing - which as an astrologer strikes me as interesting. Do the differing nature of planetary magnetic fields 'color' their astrological meanings? Neptune and Jupiter both have huge magnetic effects, and their astro-metaphysical effects reflect that.

 

This strikes me as a subject worth looking into (after I catch up with everything else which needs doing. But I'll get there!)

 

In the meantime, do we know where the radiant of this comet is? Apparently not. So far the only thing I've been able to find out with regards to the Comet 2013's orbit is that it's closest point to the Sun (the perihelion point) is at 1.39957 astronomical units, which puts it just a bit inside the perihelion point of asteroid Atlantis (a point which challenges us to give up what we know and think we want so that we can find that thing which will really fulfill us)...and just outside Mars' perihelion point.

 

I've also found out that JPL (the Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, California) has Comet 2013 A1 already listed as Siding Spring, which when you look that up leads to this:

Which if you do a bit of reading turns out to be one of Australia's best known observatories, a facility which includes the SkyMapper Telescope....

....which causes me to wonder if (by any metaphysical happenstance) this particular observatory will be particularly active in the 2014 Mars Watch.

 

Oh yes...2014 is when Comet Siding Spring is supposed to arrive at Mars - as shown by this JPL-generated image of it's path conjuncting Mars:

So you have some perspective, here's another orbital diagram - one which shows where the comet is right now.

Also...just so you know, the date shown is a tiny bit off. Not the 'today' date, but that October 2014 date should be October 19, 2014 as the 'closest approach' date. (I should have looked up the date before working with the generator.)

 

So what's happening on that date if we look at it from the astrological perspective?

 

Here's the chart:

 

 October 19, 2014 - 00:17 a.m. (UT/+0) - Aries wheel (location not specific)

 

The bad news is that this looks like a moment when it's easy to be upset...and which on the other side is one when there may be people trying to upset everybody else. Eris/South Node in Aries with Mars as ruler of Aries in Sagittarius conjunct Ras Alhague (healing versus harm) and Circe (the ability to fall under someone's spell) makes this look a bit like one of those moments when 'pronouncements' get made.

 

With Eris conjunct Pandora and Pelion, this could be a time of much hope. Pelion is 'the mountain' from which we get the idea of 'much' hope and the hope part is what Pandora is about: holding on to hope amidst many bad, difficult and scary things.

 

Then again, someone may be trying to unbalance things by promising something or warning about something so that people can have hope. And oh, do people tend to fall for threats veiled in the promise of 'how to survive.' Or 'get ahead.' Or 'save what you have.'

 

All that.

 

And there is the idea that this chart has Eris at the 'tail' of a kite. That means the Eris Effect - 'being shaken' - is what we're supposed to do.

 

So think about how to 'shake it up,' folks. Evidently life wants us to get a few nuts out of our tree. Or the tree, depending.

 

Whatever this is about, it would seem to have it's starting point during the latter part of May of 2014, that being when the South Node will come within orb of discordant Eris in the weeks after a Solar Eclipse at 8 Taurus, a sensitive degree which is highly defensive and not extremely quick to react.

 

The heart of 2014 - all of it - is going to be a time when transiting Uranus is square transiting Pluto, equaling change, lest you be changed. This is a repeating theme in celestial doings which at the moment is being seen in Uranus and Pluto and being set off by a series of Solar Eclipses which began in 2013, all of which will be in Taurus or Scorpio.

 

To put it directly (and maybe a bit lightly) this is a celestial call for us to get off our duff. We are neither 'all that' nor should we be thinking we are. There is always something bigger than we are.

 

And come October of 2014, that may well reach the planetary level.

 

Oh yes...and just as a political note, isn't October 2014 a month shy of Election Day for those in the United States?

 

The curious part about this October 2014 chart is the position of Pluto. Did you notice it? In this chart, Pluto is at 11 Capricorn.

 

Guess where Pluto is now.

 

Yes, 11 Capricorn.

 

So what we are seeing in this evolution is 'how big' the stakes can get. And we have the opportunity to change things - and to change our lives - right here, right now. No, it won't be easy. But evidently (considering this is Pluto we're talking about) it's necessary.

 

If we were to think of Mars as a planet not wanting to get smacked by an asteroid (even though Mars knows Mars will survive), how does that translate into our daily lives? 

 

That would seem to be the metaphysical question.
