Venus in Virgo / Hidalgo Direct

There’s something about Venus in Virgo falling just after Venus in Leo which sometimes seems like a grand cosmic joke. After all, there we are getting into rhythm (with ourselves) while putting on some sort of ‘game face’ with which we dazzle others.

Yes, even when we’re bad, grumpy and entirely ticked off, under Venus in Leo it’s at least a good performance - and in time, as Venus sails through Leo’s degrees we get to where we can see how it all works (whatever ‘it’ is).

Good or bad, at least we ‘grok’ it, to borrow from Heinlein’s ‘Stranger in a Strange Land.’ (Sometimes you just have to use the word that works, regardless of its official language status or lack thereof.)

And then Venus moves into Virgo - a sign transiting Venus’s normally beneficial and responsive energies often fail to produce even a teaspoon of joy in. Still, it’s not like that’s any surprise - or at least it shouldn’t be as Venus is about 'the reward.' The response... and yes, hopefully the applause (with a side of ‘oooh’ and ‘aaah’).

And Virgo? Virgo is about the effort. The work. The responsibility.

So when we put the two together we get Virgo starring in the role as a zodiacal ‘do it right’ authority against Venus’ aim to win, celebrate and relax, enjoy and receive accolades at leisure - which is something of a problem as leisure is something of a dirty word where Virgo is concerned. As gracious and lovely as transiting Venus in Pisces can be (Venus being exalted in Pisces), that’s pretty much the level of discomfort, annoyance and sense of unwanted obligation Venus in Virgo may be able to rise to over the next several weeks once Venus enters Virgo on September 5th at 5:08 in the evening UT/+0 time.

Then we add in the fact that this particular Venus-Virgo ingress is happening not just in the wake of Ixion and Pholus going direct (see previous post) but also just as asteroid Hidalgo enters its two-day allowance to go on station - and then direct - come Sunday the 7th.

That station will be at 26 Sagittarius, a degree which because it is between 20 and 29 of the sign is never only a personal thing. Yes, you may have all sorts of feelings and opinions on any given subject. (In fact, being that this is Sagittarius we’re talking about, that could actually be plural feelings and plural subjects.) But whatever you’re focused on or involved in, you’re not alone in the doing, thinking, feeling, focusing, opinion-rendering or trying to figure out how to fix something which has gone wrong or which has gotten out of hand (both these last being common Sagittarian trials even without Ixion and Pholus' station effects).

As for the specifics of the degree, 26 Sagittarius is known for providing (and needing) a good deal of flexibility. This is a degree which shifts and changes and presents different ‘faces’ or factor in just about every situation and case. Sometimes such malleability is useful - as in the case of an actor or a dancer exercising their craft (26 Sagittarius is known for skill of movement, though not necessarily grace). But then... despite the fact that this degree can sometimes manifest as with warmth, friendship and outstanding loyalty, Sagittarius can also come off with a shiftless and untrustworthy edge which makes others think every new move, idea or opinion is some attempt to manipulate others (or some situation) for personal gain or aggrandizement.

And just to make it more exciting, all of these plus and minus factors may be being true and on display at the very same time.

With Hidalgo going direct at this degree the emphasis is on the manner, mannerisms or the manners (as in politeness) with which we do something. So people may change what they’re doing during these days and going forward. Or we many, any of us, realize that while our goal may be perfectly respectable, how we’re going about it (or even how we’re acting as we’re going about it) is creating problems for our Self, others...or even for that aim we seem to be so bent on.

Another thought to consider is that up until October 2010, 26 Sagittarius had been the degree of the Milky Way’s Galactic Center for many a plural decade. So anyone born before October 2010 has this point (depending on where and how it is positioned in that chart) as an active position and thus a ‘place’ where they need to ‘give’ to the world (this being a ‘beyond global’ point, this isn’t to ‘others’ but to our world/planet) in order to pass some personal “gateway,” said gateway being indicated in any given chart by the position, sign and aspects to that big red planet known as Jupiter.

Remembering that as Venus enters Virgo it will conjunct royal fixed star Regulus, this is a time to be careful about assertions and assertiveness as Regulus promises (eventual or long-term) success only where one’s actions are not affected by the spirit or intent of revenge - which in this case may be a challenging consideration as Orcus (things which have been decided or which can no longer be changed) will be positioned at 5 Virgo as Venus enters Virgo’s earthy, concrete world of the nitty-gritty, the fact of the matter and getting our hands dirty either in the cause or because we weren’t so very ethical (or careful...maybe even thorough) about some cause.

Moreover, sitting right behind Venus (at 29 emphatic degrees of Leo) is asteroid Germania - an object which refers to strength of determination and the will to ‘continue the fight’ which here is shown as being left behind as the need for real results (Venus) ends imagining what could be in favor of dealing with what is... and what is going to become of things if necessities - no matter how much we do or don’t like them - aren’t tackled, dealt with and taken care of properly and in detail... hopefully without getting bogged down in details along the way.

Virgo is about getting it right and making things work in a healthy and productive way. Venus meanwhile, is all about results and ‘the result’ - that which we pull or hold close, and which by its yea and nay, by its functionality or lack of same tells us whether we’re heading in the right direction or whether we’re just embedded in some ‘old way of doing things’ which we like or which feels comfortable to us, but which in reality is no longer useful to our present or foreseeable future.

Venus will be in Virgo until September 29th (UT/+0 time) offering us an opportunity to become more grounded, more realistic and more productive in who we are as people...and in what it means to be human. During the weeks ahead we’re likely to feel vulnerable, but that doesn’t mean we need to (or should) lower our standards or exclude anything (or anyone) others who don’t feel, act or live like us.

Virgo’s keywords... health, work, service... are all about responsibility: that we have to our Self (mind and body), that we have to be a contributor and not just a ‘taker’ in this world, and to all which we acknowledge about being human when we determine what needs to be done while simultaneously requiring of ourselves that we remember how ‘life’ is not just our life, but one we share with every being, plant and creature on this planet.

Orcus at 6 Virgo: Our Possible Price

Consequences. That’s the Orcus thing – consequences. Specifically those we can’t avoid.

And you know how much we all like a good unscheduled consequence, right….?

(Wrong!!)

Considering this (and changing the subject slightly if not at all), it continues to amuse (or maybe amaze me, I’m not sure) how the astrological world-at-large doesn’t make more of Orcus.

After all, look at all the attention Pluto gets. People are just fascinated by the allure, the craven draw of Pluto in all its potential disastrous-ness. Heck, we humans even get off on wallowing in the pain of our Pluto disasters. (We are quite the race, aren’t we?)

Our Pluto silliness isn’t really what I’m on about here…what I’m getting to is that Pluto is a dwarf planet. So is Orcus. Not to sound repetitive or anything, Pluto is also a Plutino – meaning it’s orbit is controlled by Neptune, the ‘big blue’ of our solar systemic planetary world.

And so is Orcus.

So…! Why DO we-who-are-metaphysically-inclined pay so much attention to Pluto and virtually NO attention to Orcus?

Answer: because Pluto’s energetics pertain ONLY to ‘what happens.’ We don’t much notice Plutonic consequences…we just feel the deliciously dangerous draw of their allure.

Pluto effects really hit in an event’s wake. It’s energies embody a less-than-fully-planetary-sized processing of our ability to forget (for good and ill), ignore (for the best and otherwise) and attempt to outguess eventuality (good luck with that). Where Plutonic forces function as part of our legacy, not all of us care (though some do fervently, granted) and where they pertain to our projecting our greatest desires on the future Pluto brings us those Grand Twists of Fate. Pluto is also about that we inherit through being born to whomever we were born to and how we harness (or don’t harness) our abilities in relationship to the world around us and our life in general.

In other words, Pluto is something we work with.

Orcus, on the other hand, is about consequence. In other words, Orcus is about that which is over, done, finis – and about which we can do nada, zilch and exactly zero.

With Pluto, in other words, we still have hope. How well founded that hope is….? Well, that’s what we might call “the Neptune side of Pluto” and all about how realistic we are and how well we deal with our emotionality. (And there’s nothing like a Pluto transit to teach us where we’re a wee bit wanting in the Emotionality Department… do I hear a seconding of this notion?)

(Don’t all groan at once, please…)

But to the point: where there is Orcus, there is no more negotiation. There is no hope of changing the situation as it stands. To the Romans, Orcus was the god-type who greeted you on the other side of the doorway through which you passed when leaving this life. And true to form when it comes to so much that Rome adopted from ancient Greece, apparently Orcus was the chilling godly sort of type who welcomed folks to the afterlife and then walked them to their destined destination in the underworld while having a (perhaps tastefully critical) conversation with them about what they did in life which… well… wasn’t so nifty keen and cool.

Nothing like a reminder after the fact, is there?

Like all of the objects controlled by Planet Neptune, Orcus tests our (Neptunian) responses to our own feelings and our reaction to being made to feel those feelings. With Pluto, the ‘lure’ (if you will) to get us into the situation which tests is primal and desirous.

With Orcus, it’s just fact. And it’s the very coolness and dispassionate factuality of Orcus which is so very daunting.

Yea verily to some – or to all of us on some occasions - even frightening.

Still, the thing to understand about Orcus is that the idea of ‘this is now dead and done, you can’t change it’ is not always as final as it sounds. Certainly we might expect to see (and yes, do see) transits from Orcus or to someone’s natal Orcus when someone dies. But Orcus isn’t a ‘symbol of death.’

It’s just an indicator that where you have been coming from – particularly as that pertains to what’s “ideal” to you emotionally…or idealized by you emotionally…that said ‘Neptunian illusion’ is no longer valid.

And maybe it was never valid.

Where Orcus is concerned, we face the utter lack of control which Pluto makes us think we can somehow get hold of.

And now Orcus is going retrograde.

The date: December 6, 2013 – which means the ‘window’ for station effects opens around December 4th and extends to…let’s say December 8th. During this time life will be becoming ‘ever more Sagittarian’…busy but introspective and filled with ideas and things which need – and which are worth contemplating.

But to put this a bit more cut-and-dried-ly, Mercury will be moving into Sagittarius on the 5th (the Sun is already in Sagittarius) and as of the 7th, Mars will move into Libra.

That puts Orcus – this ‘vibe of consequence’ (or maybe ‘consequential vibe’) right between two influences which would tend to say we went too far too fast and have either said too much or too little…and that we now (Orcus) are recognizing we have to face the consequences of our actions. Or lack of actions.

What has happened, what we’ve done or not done is the Orcus part. How we feel – and indeed whether we feel, whether we are willing to deal with our reality? That’s the Neptune part.

Here’s the magic: with Neptune, to accept is to enshroud yourself with the ability to learn better (always good) and to – if you want to – improve things by adopting the Neptunian position of humility and admitting your errors or vulnerabilities at least to your Self.

That Orcus is going retrograde at 6 Virgo reminds us that the person we have responsibility for Self but at the same time how life cannot become a matter of our ego or ego drives, positive or negative – that when they do (or because they have) we may be ‘judged’ as wanting.

Unless of course, you’re willing to ‘own’ your own errors. At that level, Orcus transits (and stations, yes) are about knowing there are consequences…and how that pertains not just to us, but to the consequences others may ‘pay’ for us.

That’s the thing which over time…after now having had even just a handful of years as an astrologer in which to watch new (to us here on Earth) points and think them through…that’s the thing which is becoming more obviously to me than ever about Plutinos. Yes, they do each have their own particular ‘test’ and way of bringing about big shifts in our lives. At the same time however, they all also represent a ‘class’ of astronomical object which has (and should have) it’s own astrological meaning.

What I’m referring to here is the fact that what makes a Plutino a Plutino is the fact that its orbit is controlled by Neptune through Neptune’s amazing ability – as a planet - to influence vast swaths of space (and just about everything wandering through that space) all along its orbital path.

In short, Plutinos generate the sort of vibe which has a peculiar sort of ‘radiant’ quality. Think of Pluto in the unfortunate case of a terrible traffic or train wreck which everybody then has to come and stare at. Pluto has that ‘magnetic’ effect – the lure and allure, the fascination and all the possibilities of guilt and guilty pleasures which go with that.

And Orcus?

Orcus isn’t the train wreck…it’s what we do to create a train wreck in our own lives. And considering that, Orcus going on station at 6 Virgo says a lot. For one, the Sabian Symbol for this degree is ‘A HAREM,’ – a singular collective which stresses receptivity, with noted astrologer Marc Edmund Jones referring to this as ‘a fateful (even if sought after) subservience to the vagaries or desires of the emotional nature’ with Dane Rudhyar counting by thinking of this state of existence as ‘an emptiness of waiting’ which begs to be used for positive purposes.

Why we create what we create, and why that was important enough to serve as sufficient motivation to bet the most irreplaceable thing we have in life (time) is at least as important as what we create or what others think of us. It would seem we have each – in some part of our life – gotten ourselves to a place where we can do nothing but wait for some right moment or turn of tide.

Having created our ‘consequence’ (good, bad or mixed) we are now being asked to look at what some might think of as the most restrictive or punitive parts of our experience as a source of personal enlightenment.

Orcus Direct: Consequence, or Consequential?

The mythic Orcus isn’t on what I’d think of as the modern mythic top 10 list. But Orcus does represent an interesting mythically described trait, that of facing a reality which can no longer be changed.

The god Orcus supposedly met us when we crossed over from life into death, serving as an ‘escort’ for us between that point and the moment of judgment.

There have been moments when I’ve thought of  Orcus as a Roman god doorman. You know…you arrive at the appointed ‘address of death’ and Orcus greets whisks open the door to the post-life court building: Good day…not for you, perhaps?

But just when my mythic mind gets that far (yes, I have a whole pantheon of ideas in my head) I revert to thinking of Orcus astronomically. After all, Orcus is a Plutino. And that’s sort of the fuzz on the clarity of ‘what’s done is done.’ If Orcus’ orbit wasn’t controlled by Neptune, we would think of this object as generating an energetic which is entirely cut-and-dried. In other words, simple results. Cause…effect. For any action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

But since Orcus’ orbit is astronomically controlled by Neptune, there would seem to be a point of consideration. In other words, there may be cause, but what should the effect really be? Plainly with Orcus there is a level at what’s done is done. What’s been said has been said. Water has done gone over that dam. The milk has been spilt. Feelings have been hurt, trust has been betrayed.

Thus the question seems to become ‘what now?’ coupled to either ‘did I do the right thing?’ or ‘how should I respond?’ (substitute ‘react,’ ‘proceed’ or whatever other verb applies, as necessary).

Someone may yell at you and hurt your feelings. That’s a fact. But should you yell back? Should you yell louder? Should you try to understand where they’re coming from? Should you try to reason with them? Should you ignore them? Should you walk away and give them room to yell themselves hoarse without having to get a headache? Should you call the authorities? Should you buy earplugs, a muzzle? Or maybe a squirt gun you could load with hot pepper juice to squirt in their mouth the next time they dare open it?

(Yes, I’m creative. Thanks for noticing.)

Orcus will go direct at 3 Virgo on May 17th. Given the idea of giving all stations a two-day ‘allowance’ before and after the actual station, that means its station begins on May 15th and ends on May 19th.

May 15th is the date that Mercury enters Gemini. And May 20th (the day after Orcus’ station ends) is the day when the Sun will leave Taurus and move into Gemini. Gemini plus Gemini equals…much information. Lots to do. Many choices.

But with the Sun entering Gemini as transiting Uranus (in Aries) squares transiting Pluto (in Capricorn), that adds a little ‘blast powder’ to the mix. We will hope it’s only mental. But Pluto-Uranus is not a relaxed pairing under any conditions. And since squares indicate stress creating problems unless all attributes are in balance, it’s likely that Sun-Mercury here represents information which with the dual-Gemini qualifier means there’s a whole  heaping helping of input. Or things to deal with.

Let us also remember that this is all taking place only days after a Solar Eclipse in Taurus. In an emotional degree of Taurus, telling us that whatever happens it may affect your feelings and your Taurean sense of safety, stability, satisfaction, security and comfort…or this may well represent a time when your world is affected (or at least influenced or impacted) by someone else’s sense of Taurean satisfaction, stability, comfort and all the rest.

And you could be the happy one. Or they could be the happy one. And the other person just may think that the other person is feeling happy at “their expense.”

If you have something going on in your life which you know (absolutely and for positive sure) is the sort of thing which is solar eclipsian to the max, Orcus’ turn to direct motion is like as not an extension of whatever that shift, process, evolution, loss, revolution, restructuring or plain old everyday challenge truly is. 

OR….considering this is Orcus and Orcus does refer to something which is ‘done and cannot be changed,’ this may be a time when you’re committed to “Thing A” but which is now complicated by “Thing B” coming along. Seeing as Taurus represents resources and one of the easiest (and most general) forms of “resources” to cite is money, you may have committed the bulk of your cash or cash flow to “Thing A” (which cannot now be changed, in true Orcus style) only to be challenged by “Thing B” suddenly demanding some kind of financial investment.

This is just one way to look at what may be going on. Whatever happens, considering the ‘order’ of celestial events in this moment (solar eclipse, Mercury’s Gemini ingress, Orcus going direct and the Sun’s Gemini ingress in tandem with Uranus square Pluto)…there is some level at which this period has an overhanging aura about how we make (Gemini) choices and learning to accept that no choice is perfect. And that every choice is its own risk, no matter how well we plan. That could pertain to choices you’re making at this point to move you on from some choice you made in the past which hasn’t played out. Or which maybe worked for a while, but is no longer functional. Then again, you may be entirely on track with your life in general and be shifting gears with the solar eclipse and moving right along only to get walloped by something you didn’t expect.

To repeat: since Gemini is an air sign, the likelihood is that this centers in airy matters: thoughts, ideas, communications, something committed through verbal speech or the written word or even figures. (Yes, accounting is a Gemini thing since it is really about accounting for things chosen.) Yes, we have earthy, tangible signals coming from the eclipse in Taurus. And yes, Pluto in Capricorn is the signature of real live life structures which are evolving even as we speak.

But all that brings us back towards day-to-day functionality. And when you get to that sort of thing, then you’re talking daily operations (Gemini, ruled by Mercury) and getting things done so your life gets on track and your cause is advanced through your efforts (Virgo, ruled by Mercury).

If you missed the blog-chat about Mercury entering Gemini, you’ll find it right where this post ends. That’s the thinking-doing part of the equation. But the how you do it and the fact that how you do something affects your reward (present tense and eventual)? That’s another version of Orcus in Virgo.

Which brings us – specifically – to 3 Virgo.

3 Virgo is a degree which generally indicates the need to know your stuff and to have ‘invested’ in learning how to do what you do over a decently long period of time. So one form of problems which arise here have to do with trying to ‘get by’ without expertise or without having earned your chops in some way. And Orcus making a turn here is likely to create a focus on where you may have a lack of understanding or expertise or…let’s face it…where you may have been slacking off or trying to scoot by without making all the proper, long-form efforts.

But there is also a bit of the ‘angel on your shoulder’ quality which comes with this degree. It seems to reflect the ‘universality’ idea in the Sabian symbol for 3 Virgo, a symbol which reads: Black and white children pay together happily. While mistakes are mistakes, there is an aura of being allowed to work through differences which goes with this degree.

So even if Orcus greets you at the door with a you know you’re in trouble, right? The reality of the situation may be that the next sentence is you’ll make it through. It’s going to take a lot of work and you may not like the process, but you will get where you need to go…eventually.

And yes, that may be very eventually. But those who do the work, those who don’t ignore the need to think things through and not project so much as accept that this is a season, a year, a time of much hard growth which is challenging even on a good day…?

So…when confronted, will we win?

That would seem to – in part – depend on whether we are willing to confront and own up to our demons.

That’s the other side of Orcus – the fact that we often try to walk away from and ‘be done’ with something which is going to end up haunting us because it’s in us, not in a given situation. That it's often hard to remember...or at least hard to want to deal with...? That would be the hallmark of the Neptune Effect, which is back to the idea of Orcus as a Plutino.

And not to put too fine a point on it, this is all made a little more poignant (read: trying or emotionally touchy, be it our emotions being touched or not) by the fact that Orcus is going direct in opposition to Neptune.

Plus Neptune (as we all probably recall) is conjunct fixed star Deneb, and royal star Fomalhaut.

That comes from the Neptune Effect. Let’s remember that with any Plutino, we tend to ‘envision’ what we want – or what we want to think is true. And what’s that funny Neptune rule? The thing you think true, isn’t. The thing you think least likely to be true? That’s what will ultimately prove true.

The “ugly” side of Orcus is that it speaks to something ‘about’ us (or our thinking, which seems apt with all the Gemini going around) which we don’t want to accept. Or which we don’t want to face.

And there is a level at which we would have to think that Orcus going direct – the symbolic motion of that which we’ve been harboring…and maybe trying to ignore in our selves…being given cosmic ‘liberty’ to now operate in our world, in the world, and thus come back to confront us.

We can win through. All is not ‘lost’…thought it might feel beyond us.

That ‘judgment’ we get led to by Orcus? Astrologically that’s us – our judgment. Is it flawed or faulty? Are we willing to ‘judge’ ourselves as wanting and work on our weaknesses?

Such are evidently the questions of the moment.

Orcus, Venus, Mercury: Bringing Us Down to Earth

TNO Orcus goes direct in early Virgo at 6:05pm in the evening (UT/+0) on May 15th. Several hours later, first Venus, then Mercury will move into Taurus.

Venus in Taurus is the taste of…or often for the finer things life has to offer. For those who like pop astrology, Venus tends to be spoken of as ‘lucky’ or ‘fortune in money’ and thought of as connected to a love of beauty, ease and all things tasty and pleasurable….and a period when we can manifest things as we will.

To this last, a big ‘well….sometimes yes and sometimes no.’ Much depends on what is going on in life as a whole. Venus (and Mercury) are both personal planets. So they certainly speak to what we’d like…and in particular, Venus in Taurus speaks to a time when we’re likely to really want what we want out of life. So with Venus entering Taurus with Mars – symbol of ambition and drive - already in Taurus, it’s pretty plain our hearts (if not our eyes) are firmly on personal goals and what we think is good, right and…to put it plainly, our due.

Venus moves into Taurus at 10:13pm (UT/+0) on the 15th and what with Mercury follows suit at 11:19pm (UT/+0) we are all heading towards the May 17th Full Moon with our eyes on the personal goal, need, desire, ambition.

But there are a few other things to consider here. One is that Damocles is on station to go direct tomorrow (May 16th) in Aquarius. Another is that Nemesis just went direct last week (on the 11th) in Virgo (score another for the earth sign team).

Damocles outlines difficulties we don’t recognize until we take the job on. Nemesis is the 'you know better, don’t you?’ which is now being heard. People are going to be very big with hindsight right now…that would be the Nemesis part. With Orcus going direct today (May 15th) there will also be a lot of pointing of fingers at things which have gone wrong. And we can count on a lot of that really irritating ‘now that you’ve screwed things up…’ sort of tone going around – as if everyone chooses to do the wrong thing?

Actually…no. But sometimes, yes. And the difference between these two factors (or factions, if you prefer) is part of what’s on our minds now. Could we have known? Should we have known? Could anyone have known? If they did, why did they choose to do the thing which has the negative consequences anyway?

Events, comments, realities, news…all which happens now will have a peculiar sense of consequence and often enough, resignation attached to it. Now all we can do is cope…but why would anyone want to be in the position of coping with this? (Whatever ‘this’ is.)

That all the named factors save Damocles are in earth signs says the matter is very real and very tangible. Damocles here adds…oh, call it a touch of the societal – and like as not, economic.

The Full Moon we are heading towards will occur in Scorpio. And as a matter of fact, that Moon is entering Scorpio as of 4:33 in the afternoon (UT/+0) on this self same May 15th we’re talking about after having just ‘tinged’ off Venus, which at that point will still be at 29 Libra.

That Moon/Libra connective sets up a bit of a hint that this is all about how we relate to others. Or how we feel about them. Or whether we think they think of us or even known we exist. Or matter.

By the time Orcus is turning direct in Virgo, the Moon will be in sextile from Scorpio, granting us an  opportunity to do something. But whatever that is, it had best take others and their opinions, needs and values into account.

That the Full Moon of the 17th will be in Scorpio tells us this whole lunar cycle is to some degree all about our ability to recognize that life is not simply about us or how we think. Or our ‘group.’ Only when something works for all does it…really work for all!

That would seem obvious.

About now though…we’re probably asking ourselves how obvious it really is – and why anyone in their right mind would ignore the idea that to work for everyone, things have to actually function and satisfy (you know, Venus in Taurus?) everyone.

Which leaves….what? The question of who is in their right mind? Yes, that would be apt, especially as we’re heading towards a solar eclipse in Gemini, sign of mentality – and one conjunct Aldebaran (think: integrity).

There are a lot of ways our reality can get shattered. And when we don’t die...what are the consequences of that?
